Im thining of getting a camping/hunting knife built for me. Its a quite simple design, a 4,5" handle, and a 4" blade. Convex edge, a micarta handle, 3/16" thick and 1" inch wide blade. I would prefer tool steel.

Now, the price point. I can get a Bark River design for $140-150, and with $50 more I can get a one-piece knife by Chris Reeve, with a exellent sheat. So, is it possible for me to get this made for around 100$?

I would give Justin at Ranger knives a call and see what he can do....he may just suprise you !!!!

I have seen some real nice customs on the Makers Forum for around $140-$180. I would do a scan through there to see if something grabs your attention.

Keep an eagle-eye on the "For Sale By Maker" section of the forum. There are some real bargains to be found, but you have to jump fast when you see something you like.

I don't know if Anza can meet your requirements as far as materials and grind, but I know they are in your budget and can make you a custom knife. You should e-mail them with your proposed specs and see what they can do.

You might also look into these folks, custom knives to your specs starting at $150: http://www.kelgin.com/

Daniel Koster uses convex grinds and the example prices at the website seem very reasonable: http://www.kosterknives.com/

I'm confident you'll find what you're looking for.

im not trying to be smart here but why not ask in the shoptalk forum ?? someone might have something just laying around ,or hungry and not busy ,willing to make what your asking .. just a thought

If anyone can it's Justin. A basic RD4, which is about 100$, is very similar to your specs (4/16th thick, 5160 carbon steel) and is a fanatastic camp knife.

Good point destroythealter!YES indeed Justin CAN make you an incredible knife at a fantastic price!! I LOVE my custom RD 4!!

I'm not sure if this will end up being helpful, but this post got me thinking of a custom maker her on the forums who had a web site that I once visited. He had a bunch of neat, mostly smaller fixed-blades with very reasonable prices, and his site was set up basically like a gallery of photos. I just can't seem to recall who that individual was. :o
