Who designed the necker sheath?

Has it occurred to the designer that have the edge rest against a flat surface means edge contact, and contating a glass filled nylon means the glass fibers dull the edge almost instantly?

Sorry if I sound annoyed, spent forever putting a mirror edge on the necker, only to have the edge dulled by the sheath in 5 seconds. Thought it was fluke and sharpened it again, only to have the same thing happen. Only then I decided to find out what the heck is going on, and saw how the inside of sheath looks like.

Try it if you don't believe me, sharpen the blade and make sure there's no reflection of edge, insert knife, shake it around and draw a few times, now look under light again, viola, reflection.

Urg, what good is a sheath if it dulls the knife before I even use it?

Yep - been down that road. Discussion here as well as here if you'd like to go over it...

The sheath for the necker stinks IMO. Aside from the crazy dulling problem, a lot of people have issues with the knife rattling. According to Tooj, they're redoing the sheaths for the BK-11s, but if it's anything like the gen2 BK-2, I'm sure they'll end up fixing the rattling problem (maybe by making a few that are overly tight) but the edge dulling won't go away. Your best bet would be to make up a leather or kydex sheath for it yourself or get someone on here to make one for you.

Just went through that thread, not sure if it's the same cause. I don't have BK2 so don't know if the sheath is made of FRN and the edge is sliding on a flat surface like BK11 is.

Seems so easy to fix too, either use regular plastic (like the BK7 sheath insert), or make the edge side a steep "V" so it contacts the bevel instead of the edge. There Kabar I just fixed it for you, no charge, lol.

I've heard the same thing. My plan is to make my own kydex for it when it gets here. Never done kydex before, so it should be properly hideous. I'll be sure and post pics.

i fixed the rattling with a simple plastic insert (half of a seal from a soda can)

haven't notice my knife getting dull, but then i don't mirror polish the things, just keep them at a service edge of probably no more then 400 or grit, which is higher than factory. they seem sharp to me.

one could take a hacksaw blade, trim to a wharncliff shape, and then use then to radula the edge side of the sheath's inside, and remove some plastic.

a super thin leather (or similar synthetic material) sheath would solve all rattling/stealth issues, as well as any edge issues.

i'd imagine a too tight kydex sheath would just have the same issues and/or get worn on the insides and eventually split in a nasty way. a pouch style like for a mora would be awesome.

If it's on a big chopper I wouldn't mind as much, but for something this small, it should cut well (i.e. not getting dulled by sheath) since it can't chop, at least IMHO.

Funny you mentioned Mora, the thermoplastic they use for sheath would be perfectly fine, strong enough yet does not dull edge (I tried it), Kabar doesn't even have to make a new mold, I don't really care about the rattle.

ive had the same issue with my bk14.everytime i draw it out of its sheath the edge has sheath guts on it.
