I didn't use a pocket knife last year for deer. I'm probably the only guy in PA who used a 3" old hickory paring knife one day, and a Laminated #1 mora the next. The Mora is an outstanding knife for $12, my parer was $4, and just as good.
Who else is cheap, with a capital CHEAP?
I told my dad to send either 1 for the fish, and occasional goat. The Peanut works, but theres a lot of guck to clean from it after.

Truth be told, if all one cares about is the "cut", most any inexpensive paring knife (Opinel, Old Hickory et al) will do the job and no question the fixed blade is a lot easier to maintain overall.

This is very true. In my years as a butcher/meatcutter we always used the cheap stuff we ordered from our stores wharehouse. We just ordered by size and took what brand they sent us. Chicago Cutlery was what we would get more than any other.

As long as I used the steel several times a day they would hold a good edge for a few days of HEAVY cutting. Then the cheap blade steel could be brought back to sharp on a med stone in less than a minute.

I prefer the term, "thrifty."

Stuff happens to knives and I will only invest as much money in a knife as I am willing to lose to happenstance.

I know in my heart that most anyone should be quite happy with a couple of Opinels and Moras. I envy your ability to control your knife buying. But then again, I wouldn't be here reading BladeForums if I was content with a couple of very inexpensive (and very functional) knives....

Stay sharp,

For using/carry pocket knives I tend to leave my nice Bokers etc in the drawer and go with a Camillus. It's got decent steel in it at least, but is not flashy.

Anything that takes some effort to track down, expensive or no, I tend to be more careful with. A Victorinox is easy to find, and I've lost a couple. No biggie.

I enjoy the extra stuff you get with more expensive knives. Interesting steels, quality materials and aesthetics. Maybe I dont need em but I enjoy em. So for me it isnt all that expensive because its a hobby I enjoy.

I am pretty tight with the coin. Its a good thing these days I think. I buy what i need not what i want. May be wrong for bein that way, but i ain't never hurt no one doin it.

I'm cheap and not afraid to admit it. Fortunately, you dont need to spend a ton to get a good quality knife. My most expensive folder is a $50 used BM Mini Grip. Everything else is under $40 (many from the Sale forum here) - Kabar Doziers, Boker Trance/Hyper/Wharcom, CRKT M18, Kershaw Storm/Needs work, Byrd Meadowlark, and Spydie Delica.

My most expensive fixed is a GL Drew $65 special. A $50 Kabar fills most of my needs.

My most expensive knife is a $50 KA-BAR USMC (which is still en-route). My EDC lineup usually consists of a Buck 110 and a Buck 301 both picked up for $30, give or take, and a $20 Kershaw Needs Work blem. I picked up a Case Sod-Buster, Jr. today for $17, and I'm sure it'll get used a lot around the house.

I can't afford to buy expensive knives, but there are so many great sub-$50 knives that it doesn't matter.

I honestly prefer cheap(er) knives. I am content with my RR's, Schrades, Ka-Bar, Barlow, Gerber and the like. I even have some of the gas station rip-offs that sure worked great in a pinch. I just don't want to invest money that I might lose in the field or at work.

I've stopped carrying my more expensive benchmade and spydercos in favor of a case peanut and a kabar dozier.

Heck, I'm using the kabar right now to prep a late night snack and it cuts great.

I prefer "frugal" as the Mora of Sweden is usually all I need. . .

I don't consider myself "cheap", but I always look for "value".

If I buy something, I want an equivalent exchange - something that's worth at least what I pay if not more.

And I respect the value of truly high quality goods and services.

Cheapos unite!

The only knives I buy now are what you would call budget folders like the tenacious, trance, etc, and the damn exchange rate makes a tenacious cost 65bucks .
