I really want to buy a shun reserve pairing knife and get a kydex sheath made so I can use it for edc tasks. Anyone have one of these? Do you all think that this will hold up or would it be just to thin?
All I know is it looks good, SG2 clad in ladder damascus! And 16 degree edge it should be an extreme slicer.

Ive thought about it on multiple occasions. I love the look and the pairing knives are affordable. I think a leather sheath would be better. I'd be afraid the Kydex would scratch it up and with the flat back to a kitchen knife blade I'm not sure how would hold it without having it pinch on that and scratch. I don't think I'd be allowed to swipe the one I bought from our knife block anyway, even though it doesn't get used because of the guilt factor of using such a nice knife.

I've seen Alton Brown or someone on television use that back part of the blade as a can opener by slamming it in to the top of a can. I don't think they were Shuns but seeing a good set of knives abused like that made me cringe.

The gentleman's steak knife friction folder is nice and comes with a sheath. I don't own one but played with one at last years factory sale and regret not buying one. I have it on my shoppingist for this year.

That would make a very nice fixed blade EDC. From what I can tell, a leather sheath is more practical here. Kydex is preferable, but like you say, I can't see how it would grip it without making a wear spot.

I too have thought about the shun steak knife. It would be a sweet edc in my opinion!
