Who else works in a blade length limited area?

I work in a Government building, and have to walk through airport metal dectectors each time I enter. Knives are limited to blades of 3" or less, and they measure all the way back to the handle, ricasso and all.

Just curious as to who else is limited in this way, and what their carry choices are? Lately, I have been rotating between a Chris Reeve Umfaan, a Chris Reeve Mnandi, a Spyderco Navigator and a Lone Wolf City Knife. Of course, my Victorinox Mini Swiss Champ goes with me EVERYWHERE in the 5th pocket of my jeans. Out of all the knives I own, that little SAK gets used the most. :)

I stay under 3" by choice. My small Sebenzas are my "big" knives. My most used is a Victorinox Settler. Others in my rotation are the Umfaan and Mnandi. I'm most comfortable with a 2 1/2" - 2 3/4" blade.

Danbo, how's that City Knife workin' out for ya?

Before I retired, I was a manager of a New York City post office. I could carry anything I wanted, and I used a knife a lot, cutting open plastic bands and twine. My long term carry was a Cold Steel tanto with a 3" blade. Sometimes I carried even smaller blades. Anything larger would have been clumsy.

Of course I had a SAK on me all the time, until Tim Leatherman came up with multi-tools! Now my Victorinox Mini Swiss Champ goes with me EVERYWHERE (thanks, Danbo!) right next to my Com-Tech Stinger. Ready for any kind of emergency!

My City knife is working out real well. I posted a review in the review area here this morning. Overall, I am pretty impressed. Especially, for what it cost.

Danbo - <3 1/2" here in Seattle, per municipal code. I go into both the Federal and State/county Courts and end up demetalizing myself in the office before I go - just too much hassle. King County Superior is manned with County Sherifs who open the blade and place it up to the edge of a counter, blade laying atop it, alongside premarked increments... All of my current carry passes their test...

I work in several Goverment Bldgs, and I've gone to work with a EK Combat Bowie and not had a problem, but I also work in maintenance, and don't use the metal detectors, I get a special ID that allows me access everywhere with no restrictions. :D

Fortunately, there's an employee entrance at the Federal building here in Roanoke -- no metal detector. :D However, my work EDC is an AT Barr folder with a blade that's just a hair under 2 1/2".

I work for a state agency and while I don't actually have a length limitation, I stopped carrying larger folders due to response to them from coworkers/supervisors. This is a pain especially since I have worked for the same agency for over 20 years most of which was as a law enforcement officer and now that I am no longer a police officer they look at me differently. While in uniform, folder size was never an issue.

Go figure, same person, same co-workers, just no more badge and uniform. :grumpy:

Motorola, where I used to work, has a 4" blade limit. So I would carry my 4" Madd Maxx or my 710 at work. Outside of work I always wore my Texas-legal 5-1/2" Camillus Maxx.

I work as a lecturer at times for a muni college in NYC. We have floating metal detectors for special events and such. Even if you are not going to the event area they screen all who enter the building. If they see any knife over 4 inches they generally take it and if it looks deadly they take it also. They will not return it and say that if you have a problem you can take it to the police station and the school provost. Since it is such bitch to get it back most let it go. The problem is the fact the school has a no weapon policy and that can cover anything they want. So even if you have a leatherman or sak they can legally take it and even press charges. The head of our security is former police who generally are asses who look for an incident to make points with the administration.
I carry a 3 inch blade sak since it is the most friendly.
