Years ago I carried a Buck 303 on a daily basis for about 10 years. (Bought one in ~75, lost it in 79, bought another in ~82, carried it till ~91.) The style became imprinted in my brain as the definition of what a pocket knife should be, except I really felt the edge should last longer.
Then I got enthused about steels with better edge retention (an enthusiasm I still have). Love the steels, but I still wasnt quite there yet with the knives that had them. The designs are useful, but something in me was still not satisfied.
I bought a 301 earlier this year and found the edge retention is better than that of the old 303(Camillus version?), but still nowhere near as good as my Benchmades and Spydercos. But I find that the 301 gets a fair amount of pocket time, because of that deep seated definition of a pocketknife I developed years ago. It just feels right.
Recently, I bought a Canal Street single blade Trapper with a blade of 14-4 CrMo, which is Latrobe Steels name for 154CM. Lovely thing with Bone handles. The steel performs great and I have started carrying it a lot, but I still like the 301 design. And I am reticent to drop that pretty thing in my pocket with a load of keys like I do with the 301.
So, I said all that to say that with Buck doing a lot of good things with 154CM, I sure wish they would make a version of the 301 with 154CM blades. I dont need fancy handle materials. The black plastic scales suit me just fine. I would just like to see a good working knife in 154CM. No one else has one, and I was wondering if anyone except me would be interested in owning one.
