in a couple hours on ebay about four of these tradional folding hunters are closing. I put a token bid on one, I like the pattern. But my question (and there are only two people here who may be able to answer it), is who had these made? I had a couple of my beloved Imperial Frontiers with similar handle markings.. These are not Frank G/ Schrade 'scrimshaw' applied in the way LT has told us about.. just printed on, and the ones I had were so bad I just used my thumb nail to scrape the writing off. But they were similar, same printing fonts/ things like 'Turkey Hunter' and 'Deer Hunter'.

Obviously, someone came to Imperial Schrade (IKCO back in the Imperial Frontier days for these, and they were made up for them. But who? I wrote the seller, asking for any info on the boxes. Here is the answer:

"All the knives except the Coon Hunter knife has a regular box with a slip that goes over that box. On that slip it has the design that is on the knife handle. On the box itself there is a stamp on the end 508 on all of the boxes. That is all that is on the outside of these boxes.

I am betting 508 was the Schrade 'Scrimshaw' model number.

Any help appreciated.

Phil

508 is the Schrade scrim number for the folding hunter pattern. Whoever ordered them up may have just ordered them blank and had them screen printed by a novelty company. Look at one with a jeweler's loupe and you might confirm the screen printing pattern.

Sorry I don't have more info.

I noticed these too and can't add to what Codger said. It sure looks like a low budget job in any event. There are 3 different sheaths for the 5 SC508's he's selling.

Here is another "factory" knife. Someone want to tell me what is wrong with this picture? Oh, the knife is real enough and a political memorabilia....but....6605567051

Is it the box?
Shouldn't it be in the brown 2 piece box if it was made in 1985?
I am not sure, just my best guess.

Very good guesses. One of these days I may have enough of these box and insert details compiled to do some real dating. Until then, it is just a matter of seeing what does not fit. This was an assembled hodge podge called a matching set. It is not.

The blue striped box is post-2000.
Schrade Tough logo box insert has the website which is post-1997.
Insert #7180711 is copyright dated 2002.
Knife etch is dated 1985 which begs a blue foam or flocked lined woodgrain gift box, and a quad-fold yellow box insert.

Just like the D'Holder Del showed us today, this knife came from the 'Schrade factory sale', according to the seller. These off the wall items are gonna be with us... and causing problems... for years.

Mike is doing us all good work on his box/insert research. He discovered one of my 'NIB with paperwork' was not entirely Kosher. I gotta send him some more scans of my stuff.

Yes, the Frontiers with these same handle markings were low-budget stuff. As I wrote, scraped off with a thumb nail. I'm not bidding on any of them... just don't see where they would fit into my collection. Just curious, because of the link to the Frontiers.
