I'm thinking of buying a new folder in the ~$100 range. I like the 730, esp. the cool handle. Never dealt with Axis lock though. Good/bad? Also while i'm at it maybe even a Nimravus cub to go with my f1, hunting season is fast approaching. What's anyone's take on these knives?

Dave, I think the 730 is a good choice and you will be very impressed with how well and how slick that axis lock is. Just a thought, the Master Catalog Fall 2000 from Cabelas has a 720 Axis lock ( thats the Mel Pardue model) and Cub that both come with Hardwoods Advantage camo handles with matching kydex/carbon fiber sheaths. Cost on the 720 is about $150.00. The 720 is thought by many to have the slickest action. Hope this helps.

Just do a search for '730,' and specify my name in that box, and I think you'll find quite a lot of praise

. This is my favorite production folder, with my favorite folder lock (just ahead of the integral lock).

I have a full-size Nimravus in M2 steel, and it quickly became my favorite production fixed-blade (although there are many customs at a similar price which should really be looked at, since owning customs is just plain fun).

Her is a link to a thread in the Benchmade Forum in which I stated my views on the 730 vs. the 710. If you haven't already done so, you might want to visit the Benchmade Forum. There are some active threads on the 730 there now, and a good number of older threads you can access via the search feature.

Stop when you get to bone.

I favor the 730--it's one of the slickest folders I have and I prefer the handle and blade shape of the 730 over the 720.

Dave,
Please look here for my impressions on Model 730 Ares and here for my impressions on Model 710 Axis Lock.
As to choice - it is the question of your individual liking, preferences and first of all handling comfort.
However you can't to go wrong with either.

The 730 is a great knife. I like the handle shape and colors. It is a very smooth opening knife and the axis lock is solid. I don't like it as well as the 720, but it is close.

I recieved my BM 720s and 730s last Friday. I ordered the 720 because I liked the way it looked in the catalog (this is my first "good" knive purchase). Somehow ended up adding a 730 to the order. Now that I have the knives, the 730 will definetly be my favorite. I still like the 720 alot, but the 730 is way more than I expected. Good size, good feel in my hands, great blade shape, and the colored handle grew on me fast. Gotta love the Axis lock too!

The Axis lock is everything a lock on a folder could reasonably be. Positive, easy to operate, strong, and reliable.

The 730 is an interesting knife, the AFCK was I think the knife that made Benchmade. The 710 introduced the Axis, and has fast, graceful lines. The 705 is a beautiful medium size folder that is really overbuilt. The 720 I have handled, It doesn't do anything for me. The 730 is my pick out of all the Benchmade Axis locks to date, I have a 705, 710 and a 730. The 730 has a simple blade shape, and comfortable handle. A real every day user that you will like more each time you pick it up.
