I bought a newTaclite 885 recently. I really like it.
When the Taclite first came out a few years ago, I looked at it and, while I found it interesting, the blade pattern just didn't appeal to me at the time.
Also, there was a problem with the lock-up on some of the early ones, including the Taclite that I looked at in the store, which put me off as well. This problem was noted by Buck and subsequently corrected.
But, I came across an 885 recently in a local store and bought it. Now, I really like the knife. I'd buy a second one if I could find one locally; the one I bought was the last one in the store (Lebaron's).
My Taclite is quite well put together, no problem there.
The lock release on mine is not a problem, but I can see how others might it a little awkward. It does require a little more dexterity than a regular liner lock to release, but then it provides a little more security against accidental release. It works just fine for me.
The Taclite reminds of a Sebenza, the narrow clip-point model, both the handle and the blade. Almost like a copy, from the pictures of Sebenzas that I've seen. I wonder about that.
All-in-all, the Taclite is a sturdy well-made and designed knife that's well worth buying. Too bad Buck stopped making them.
