the blade-with-a-hole people were talking about it as a possible limited run for one of their preferred models. i understand fahrid is already making some. the stats of the metal is mind-blowing: can be quench-hardenend to rc 72, treated down to 68-70, and they say it uses up one whole belt sander per inch of blade (but then, that's with stock removal.) it's like the bugatti veyron of steels. anyone tried hammer-forging the thing? what custom maker is trying for a folder?

meaning the folder? they say in its annealed state, hardness ranges between 35 and 50. stock removal might be impractical in that case. might as well blank it while it's hot and do some forging.

Good luck....

I remember reading about one guy using a hydrolic forge on S30V, apparently it sounded like he was using the machine on hardened metal.

Some things are just not meant to be forged.

With stuff like this I still think they should HIP the powder straight into the shape of a blade.

52100 with only 1% chromium is harder to forge than a simple carbon steel. something with that much chromium and other alloying elements is going to be brittle around forging temps and fall apart under impact, and will air harden during forging if it cools at all

Some ideas sound good when it's other people doing the work. :)

If you are serious I'd contact Farid. He's the only one I know working with the steel and he makes both folders and fixed blades and has used most of the steels people dream about. Check out his website or older forum threads to see some of the projects he's done. If it can be done he's probably the one that did it!

I had one. A DDC. Great knife but terible steel for a knife. Too hard to shapen and impractical for my needs. Rex 121 is great for industrial use like cutting plastic in molds.

I hope they're burning out the cheap ones if they have to replace a belt sander 4 times for a hunting knife. :)
