I know this is kinda like closin' the barn door after the horse gets out but I bought my wife a Kindle, for Xmas, (the $139 one)

She said she liked the way it looks, I asked her how she can decide without even touchin' one, I said, "It's kinda like buyin' it on faith.", I even took her to Barns and Nobles to check out the Nook by B&N, (which comes in color).

I don't know what the electronic ink technology or how it works compared to the LCD screen used on the Nook.

If any of you folks have either format could ya let me know what ya think of the one ya have or if ya have or had both, which one do ya like better.

We just received two Kindles from my parents for Christmas. We did not wait until Christmas to use them!!

My wife and I both love these things. I loaded it up with about 90 free books and a few new releases. I spent last night reading it.

I have not used any other brand or model, but I can recommend the Kindle 3rd generation very highly. It is easy to read and to use. Downloads are very fast. I don't really see how color would be of any great benefit?

We also received the leather cases for them and have ordered a clamp on light for my wife to read in bed. There is no backlight, so if you are reading in a darker room, then you pretty much need a small reading light.

My girlfriend bought me a Kindle as an early Christmas present. I love it. The electronic ink screen is very easy on the eyes. I find it easier to read than most books.

I don't have one. My receptionist loves hers. I took a look at it and it looked pretty easy to see and read. It even has a "speak" function that will read the book aloud for you (but some are restricted because of separate "book on tape" deals).

Hers is basically a reader, but now a lot of them are more like notebook computers.

She loves 19th century literature and can get most stuff for free because its all public domain by now. I don't know how much she pays when she "buys" a book.

I have an older Kindle and my wife has the newer (139) I've read about 40 books in the last year. Easy to buy and download. You will need a night light and I would buy one designed especially for the Kindle so it fits right.

I have the new Kindle3 with WiFi and 3G. Great way to pick up on public domain or extremely inexpensive reading. The screen is so good I do not need my reading glasses. Although it's not backlit, by the same token, it is easier to read in bright light, unlike most phone or computer screens that wash out.

It was a tossup whether I'd get the Kindle or Nook. Either format is a winner. The Nook Color is a slightly different beast and B&N is still pushing their original Nook as a dedicated and highly effective ebook reader.

Anybody have a Kindle???

I have a kindle 2 which was given as a gift 2 years ago. I can honestly say I've never received another gift that has gotten so much use. The contrast afforded by the e-ink screen is startlingly similar to reading newsprint. You can adjust the font size on the fly. More books available via 3G wherever you go. I'm a big reader, I don't even get tv service (by choice) and most of my entertainment comes from hobbies or the kindle. Great device.

Thanks for the links Esav, they helped a lot, also answered some othe questions I had about the Kindle.

This is justifiably one hot item. You can see how many people are really happy with them.

I bought a Faux leather cover for it, cost $13 but it doesn't have a readin' lamp I guess I'll have to get one with a built in book light.

For now she'll just have to use the book light I got her for a Stockin' Stuffer.

I bought one for my wife for Christmas, I also got the leather case with built in light. It really is nice, and the lighted case makes it even better. I opted for the wireless version (non 3G), I see no need for emergency book downloads.

My father bought one for my mother at Thanksgiving (the $139 WiFi model). I was so impressed with it that I ordered the $189 WiFi/3G model for myself, and I've been using it every day since it arrived. It's a great piece of equipment, you can carry a whole library around with you. The screen contrast is great in any light that you can read a paper book by, and it runs for days on a charge (probably more if you turn the wireless off). I give it two thumbs up.:thumbup:

It runs much longer if you turn the wireless off. The only charge it uses is when the page turns, not when it's "on".

Wonderful device. Kindle 3 with 3G and WiFi is the best travel companion you can buy.

(Well legally, anyway, :D )

I have a latest generation one with the leather case that comes with a built in LED.

The kindle is the best damn electronic gadget I've bought in years. I'm a voracious reader; I read easily a 1000+ pages a month for fun, plus the new york times everyday. Since I've go the kindle I read the Times on it every morning, then various books throughout the day.

Its a simple, purpose built tool that does one thing very, very well. If you like reading, its as good as it gets. The screen is as good as reading paper.

My wife and I gifted each other the current 3G version. We love them! The lighted cover is also very well designed.

i tried a friend's kindle for a week...i just cannot get used to reading a book electronically...i think if i was traveling a lot like i used to i might sing a different tune, but even then i strongly prefer to get an audiobook...
