Who has an Ener-G?

I got the new catalog in the mail, and am curious about this one and how the flipper works...I know how flippers work, but is the one on the Ener-G knives mechanically different? It says in the description, "..everything about the Ener-G is meant to conserve your energy by putting the knife's built-in energy to work."

I like the look of them, and also the fact that there are no studs or holes in the blades makes the design unique (for me) in a one-hand folder. Also, how does it carry?
Thanks!
Jim

The flippers on the EnerGs are interesting. I believe the flipper is a separate piece of steel that you push to open the knife. That flipper pushes the blade open & uses some leverage (Like a cam) to open the blade. When the blade fully opens, the detachable flipper stays in the handle, instead of being attached to the blade & act as a finger guard.

I hope that description helps.

As far as carrying them, it's similar to most of the newer Kershaws that size. I believe it sits lower in the pocket if you set it up for tip-down carry. It's a fairly light knife (A little blocky, but not too bad). Personally, I don't care for the "skateboard" tape they use with the G-10. I wish they just used G-10 all around.

Other than the handle material's differences, it's a well built knife & definitely fun to play with.

CL01 did a great job explaining how the flipper works. It flips very easily and fast, no problems there. I have a small and it is a little on the thick side, but very light and hides in the pocket well. I find the tape helpful for gripping on the smaller knives so I like it. I love the blade profile. It is a nice knife and I am going to get a large (II) at some point.

I would love to see the Ener-G's flipper on a Speed Safe setup. I wonder if that type setup would be considered a switchblade/automatic and subject to the same restrictions.

Love my Ener-G
Fits my hand med, like a glove.
Took the clip off and put on a lanyard,as all my jeans have a sewn in knife pocket, for a more discreet carry. Carries nice and flat.:D

smegs, not too sure what you're describing. The function of the flipper works perfectly. My ENER-G's will all fire as fast if not faster than some of the SpeedSafe models. As for SpeedSafe being subjected to the switchblade rules, no, they are different and don't apply. I don't think a SpeedSafe ENER-G would cross that line, unless Kershaw put a firing button on the handle. And I don't think that is going to happen with this model anytime soon. Let me rephrase that last sentence: I don't think Kershaw would ever change this knife, unless it was for a boutique run.

To James Y, if you don't have an ENER-G, you will not be disappointed in spending the $$ for one. I have 2, one is tucked into the safe for certain reasons I won't divulge, and the other rotates almost exclusively with my SG2 Blur. It's really a shame, all these knives, and 2 of them see 95% of all carry time. I've always said that my ENER-G is a folding scalpel. Prior to the SG2 Blur, it was the sharpest Kershaw out of the box I've seen, and there's very little difference in the edges of the two.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!
This sounds like it may be my next knife. I've been trying to decide between this one and the Blur. I don't buy many knives like I used to, but I really like the idea of the Ener-G. Hopefully, the tape inserts are done in such a way on the clip side that pocket material is relatively safe from over-wear. (I own some knives with handle checkering and such that I won't clip to pocket because of that). Also, due to lack of thumb studs, it seems this one could also be dropped down into the pocket as an option, too.

I also love the shape of the blade...I like all kinds, but my all-time favorite blade shapes are very basic drop or spear-points. They feel great to use, look great, and seem to cover almost all the bases in my uses.

...James Y yer gonna love the Ener-G...I have the Ener-G II and it does indeed fire as fast as most any Speed Safe equipped knife and I totally love it. As was mentioned, the blade profile is super and it just plain looks great and feels great in the hand. The thought of the Ener-G coupled up with the Speed Safe system gives me the shakes...LMAO...I'd love it...:thumbup:

I have a small ENRG-2 and love the knife. Cuts like a scalpel and has great ergonomics. The knife just fits the hand so well and is comfortable in any cutting applications. The flipper is amazing! It opens as quickly as any AO and the flipper does not stick out the handle when open. I don't care for the rough trac tape they use on the handle but I am thinking about trying a sealant to smooth that out. Would love to see this with a TI handle. I do like the type of clips Kershaw is doing wide and flat maybe a little too wide on the Junkyard Dog.

Ditto on everything said so far.

I just got the larger Ener-G, and it's nice and solid, not too heavy, with a nice, thin hollow-ground blade. No blade-play on mine, and the flipper works very well, basically, the flipper is attached to some sort of pivot, and the the tang of the blade is shaped such that pressing on the flipper accelerates it for about half of it's 180 degree arc, and then probably hits some sort of stop-pin inside the handle.

Handle ergonomics are superb, but the grip tape is a bit harsh on clothes, and the clip is very tight.

Haven't tried to cut anything yet, but I don't think it will disappoint in that area, nice high hollow grind after all :D.

Just about the only thing "wrong" with this design is if the blade isn't fully out, the flipper kind of wobbles up and down - if the blade is locked up, so is the flipper.

Just to help clarify this discussion, the ENER-G II is the larger of the two. Little brother is just called the ENER-G. I should have mentioned this in my post as both of mine are the larger II models.

Hope this helps!
