Hey guys,

I haven't been on recently due to a quick illness, but apparently I'm not the only one. It has encumbered a multitude of outdoor projects that I've needed to do. I couldn't even dream of chopping until today. Who here has been sick recently? How has it effected your outdoor time?

2 years ago I got a terrible URI that left me with a cough over winter for MONTHS. I had to minimize my time outside in cold or damp because of it.

I haven't really been sick, but my allergies have been horrible. I seriously don't remember the last time they were that bad, finally got over them about a week ago. That preventing me from getting out, and just when I got better I had to start studying for my finals that begin this week. So still no going out for me....

URI's are satanic in my opinion. This is the first winter where I made it through the entire winter season without more than a few sniffles, and I spent more time cold, wet and miserable down and dirty than I ever have, building a cabin in the mountains in 7-8 feet of snow. I also spent alot less time around masses of people and CRANKED orange juice. I'm thoroughly convinced that masses of people are much more often the cause of sickness than exposure. When I get a URI it generally turns into pneumonia and I don't fully recover til late june. I packed my Mountainsmith bag for a 3-5 day trip in the mountains more than two weeks ago and it's been sitting by the door ever since. Between my steroids doses and arthiritis issues, and my recent lactose intollerance, I've been marooned in civilization. Starting to feel better though, hopefully I'll get an acceptable weather window so the mountains aren't swampy and I don't die in a self-provoked mudslide, lol. Right now trail conditions are three steps forward, two steps back because the light powdery dirt we have, when mixed with seasonal rain, makes knee deep slicker-than-snot mud. Thoroughly convinced than other than big whitewater spring is the worst season here in Idaho.

The last time I was really sick was Nov-Dec 08. My kidneys quit and I gained 70 lbs in a week. It limited everything for about a 9 week time frame. It was so bad that I had to lay my son on the kitchen counter to change his diaper ( that was the lowest surface I could bend to reach him on). Apparently I was born with some diseased cells in my kidneys that didn't affect anything until I got very sick with both strands of the flu that was going around that year. Then my kidneys started over filtering my blood to the point that the cells were falling apart and the water from my bloodstream started pooling in my ankles and worked it's way up till they thought I might drown on my own bodily fluids.

The worst part of the whole experience was some P*nis cranium at the hospital who made fun of me for wearing shorts with snow on the ground. I had gained so much weight that the only clothes that fit me were gym shorts and t shirts. It really drove home the empathy of people in general for me.

Allergies have been worse than prior years - 7 cats inside don't help - neither does a resurgence of my childhood asthma. The years are catching up, too - takes a long time to get better - heal from a cut, etc. I should get my SSI income this summer. Where did the years go??

I automatically assume that people are going to be first class, well, you know, that way I'm never disappointed with humanity in general.

Vitamins and a crap ton of water always sees me through. I keep some multis in my bag just in case.

A-Frickn-men brother.

Drink plenty of liquids, and a multi-vit a day. I pop 2 multis a day if i'm feeling crap. Have not gotten sick *knock on wood* in about a year or so. Even allergies have not bothered me as much. Costco Centrum knock-offs are cheap.

Starting last November It has been one thing after another, Nothing to bad but it has kept me side lined all winter, it has been the worst winter in 60 plus years for me. :grumpy:

Zinc and Vitamin C are your best friends.:thumbup:

i hate being sick...
i haven't gotten sick in a while now...

twice last month and two days ago i almost got sick...

the first two i almost caught a cold... after drinking a lot of lemon juice and getting some vitamin C from pills... i was better the next day...

and last couple of days ago i felt like having a sore throat and I knew it was going to be bad cuz i felt it... drank some aloe vera extract juice and like new the next day...

last year it was pretty bad... i'd get sick almost every month... but now it feels a lot better... :D

so, a lot of lemon juice and some C supplement every day and i feel like this year is going to be a good one :)

I think that eating right has to do with it too!!! a very well balanced diet should keep your inmune system going and working at its best...

you guys should look at supplements from omni plus... all of their supplements are liquid and not too expensive...

don't just take vitamins when you feel like crap!!! :D take them everyday...
most of our food intake is not ORGANIC so we NEED the supplements... specially for those who are active (hiking, backpacking... etc)

I had two stays in the hospital this past fall, because of internal bleding. First stay lasted two days. Underwent surgery twice. Next time , I went fishing by myself a mile away from any road, did not tell anybody. I felt sick and went home. Next day I passed out, went to the hospital in an ambulance.Passeed out again. Spent seven days in. Underwent surgery htree times, recieved two units of blood.

That sucks, Hope you have a much better year this year.

Hate those hospital stays.

I had knee surgery last wednsday on my right knee. I missed our annual turkey hunt with my family. My Uncle did shoot one and texted me pics. It actually got me motivated to step up p/t. I'm planning on a short hike and some fishing on Sat.;)

This has been a pretty tough winter for me as well. Couple of bad colds that ended up in my chest, a lovely encounter with norovirus (stomach flu/food poisoning :barf: ) while on vacation in Florida and now a nasty sinus infection! :(

It has DEFINITELY impacted my outside time. Although I've gotten in a few day hikes and scouting trips, I haven't overnighted since November. I had a solo BP trip planned, cancelled, and rescheduled several times and either health, family obligations, or weather scuttled it each time.

Planning a hike early AM Saturday if my lungs are clear. Here's hoping.

I don't know if this counts as being sick, but I threw out my back this winter. I have an old construction injury that flares up once a year or so. Anyway, when it goes out, I pretty much shut down out of necessity. It's a real joy to have to go out to the woodshed and split kindling and haul firewood to keep the family warm in the winter when it is out. I take solice in the thoughts of all the tough explorers and soldiers who have endured far more pain and sacrifice than I ever will. After a few days of gutting it out it, the pain becomes bearable again and in a week or two I'm as good as new.

I have really bad allergy and sinus problems, and they hit me hard this year. A pollen count over 100 is supposed to be bad for allergies, and we hit something like 5600 for several days this year. You could literally see yellow clouds floating in the sky. It was nasty.

I work all the dang time now, so it didn't keep me from going outside, but I did have to shut the store down a few times when my employees could not cover for me.

i got hit HARD with a bad head and cheast cold a couple weeks ago. my friends and i had plans to go hiking and camping out of state. it wasnt a good idea but i went any way. need less to say hiking with a big heavy pack when you cant breath out of your nose sucks!!! i still had fun but i paid for it, i was sick much worse after getting home.
