Who has the proprietary rights to the FAQ?

How many would purchase a CD of the FAQ?

Some sites, I have known have published a CD of their Web site, prior to taking it down for one reason or the other.

I for one would certainly purchase a CD of the FAQ.

Interesting idea or no?

I believe the rights to the FAQ are held by Himalayan Imports and/or Howard Wallace (excepting John Powell's pages, which aren't exactly part of the FAQ, but in any case the rights to those are held by John Powell, naturally).

1- I would seriously consider it!!!!

2- Very interesting!!!! But perhaps an e-mail to Howard or the concerned parties might be in order or repost with the correct subject as I almost didn't read this because I thought it was for another knife and the response was low.:(

Seems to me like the ones who contributed to the FAQ should get their share of th proceeds. Seems fair to me.:)

I'd cast my vote to stick any profits into the kami social services fund and I'm about 99.9% sure anybody else with a vested interest in this would go along with me.

Well with about 150 people reading this so far you would think there would be more interest in it.:(
For those who wasn't around or don't recall the HI Forum over on www.KnifeForums.com was in limbo for a mightly long time!!!!:(
I know I sure wish I had of saved more pix than I did then, but then again I was on WebTV at the time and didn't have a hard drive to stick them on.
For anyone who hasn't read the old HI KnifeForums threads there is a plethora of information there!!!!
That -was- the original HI Forum!!!!

I think Howard, Uncle Bill, JP are the main sources of the FAQ, with sizeable portions from Yvsa, Walosi and others.

A few issues for this idea though:

(1) some of the FAQ have actually become part of the HI main site

(2) I'm still in the midst of revising/reorganising things

(3) JP also wants to update some information I think

(4) It is available freely online right now, so I don't exactly see the advantage of a CD-ROM version at the moment

I doubt that there would be much in the way of cash proceeds, but it would be interesting for everyone to lend a hand and edit that accummulation of information into a real print ready book. Between us we can probably gather many thousands of khukuri photos, and there is enough material in the FAQ and elsewhere to pull together a half dozen very solid chapters of text on the history of Khukuris and Himalayan Imports. Imagine putting together a real tome (about 1000 pages) with photos and specs of most of the khukuries imported by HI since its start during the early 1990s. Then add a large catalog of photos for other khukuries all organized by OAL and Style.

Now that would be a real research tool; just measure the length of your unknown khukuri, turn to the right section, and flip through the photos until you find a match. The knife pictures could be mostly published in medium resolution BW perhaps 8 photos with individual captions to the page. We could always add a small full page/full color section for professionally taken photos of the 25 most outstanding examples.

Perhaps HI can put together a non-profit entity (HIMALAYAN IMPORTS KHUKURI RESEARCH FOUNDATION) to, accept contributions, gather and sort through the data, and produce a book with revisons every 3-4 years.

Steps:
1) Set up foundation
2) Select editorial commitee
3) Line up contributors, and sponsors (mostly pre-ordered books)
4) Edit
5) Publish
6) Roll excess funds into the KAMI SOCIAL SERVICES FUND.
7) All rights to be held by the Foundation

I would suggest an attractively bound book that would be priced to sell in the ~$US 150.00 range; or, at about the price of an average HI khukuri. (not to worry... there will probably be a few book blems too)

Anyone who contributes X_hours of work (reasearch and editing) would get a complimentary copy of the book and a big thank you, and all other contributions of photos and information would be duly credited.

n2s,

sounds like good idea, but perhaps as a long-term goal.

some of the information is also JP's, and that should appear in his book at some point in time. some of the other info has been incorporated into the HI main site, as initially both Howard & I had thought when I took over the FAQ I might just incorporate them all into the main HI site, but I'm not certain now if that would be the best way or not, so right now it's somewhat inbetween.
