Hi, does anyone here have some pics of a filled up Maxpedition Proteus versipack? Or just with some common items next to it for size reference.
I had some maxpedition stuff and it all was smaller then I thought it would be.
I need a bag that can hold my camera (Olympus C8080WZ), Garmin eTrex Visa GPS, Cellphone and the usual knife (Sebenza) /wallet/flashlight (SureFire G2) /PSK (Doug Ritter) stuff etc.
Thanks,
Ted

The Proteus is an excellent and well-made piece of kit.

Mine is usually used to carry a mobile phone, PSK, wallet, sunglasses, Gerber multitool in pouch, pop can, waterproof etc. etc.

Shown with a Surefire E1, Mini MagLite, AA cell, Spyderco UK Penknife and Traser Glowring. In the (extra cost optional accessory Maxpedition pouch) is a Streamlight Twintask 2 x 123 cell.

The top view shows a standard 330ml pop can in the main body.

The Pocketwrench gives a scale.

I've been thinking about getting one of these also. Do you use it as a butt pack or do you usually carry/sling it?

Synchonicity.. just found a Canadian dealer for this Proteus and then I find this thread.. looks perfect fot my wants ..thx for great pix.

Hi All-

The Proteus is a great bag that is sized perfectly. If you get a bag that is too big, you'll always find extra junk to carry. The ability to transition between handheld and small-of-back carry is very convenient. I must admit that I have turned to handcarry more and more...it's nice without straps flopping around all over the place. The black Proteus that I've been using for months can perfectly handle this load without a worry:
  • SureFire M2 Centurion in SOEgear sheath
  • four PowerBars
  • cotton bandanna
  • sunglasses case
  • assorted coins
  • hand sanitizer and moisturizer
  • wallet
  • knife
  • cellular telephone on externally mounted CP-M holster
  • plastic zip-ties
  • Altoids mints and gum tins
My sole concern about the design is that one must take the time to unbuckle TWO compression straps when one wishes to access the two main zippered compartments underneath. It would be a great improvement if Maxpedition could put the smaller rectangular compartment (typically used for a wallet) on the outside of the sturdy compression straps for sake of convenience. You don't realize how frequently you need to access your money or I.D. until using this bag.

My digital camera isn't the greatest in the world, but I'll see what can be done about decent pictures.

Ck out the new Devil Dog , Just ordered mine and will get back when I have the time to ck it out, :D

Hi All-

The Maxpedition DevilDog is huge. Way too big for practicality if you're looking to travel light with just the essentials. I'd stick with the Proteus for typical daily use.

Hi All-

Another view of the Proteus for size comparison:

I think the model for that pic. is the owner of Maxpedition...
One of the dealers told me that he is VERY small and that causes size perception problems with all of their products!

Hi jamesraykenney-

A butt is a butt is a butt! Even if the owner of Maxpedition has a tiny waistline, you still get an idea of what the packs look like on an adult human. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I just orderd a proteus and it should be here any day now, but for those of you that already have one, will a 1 liter Nalgene bottle fit in the main compartment? Specs say 9"x6"x3" so i'm assuming it would but just curious to know ahead of time. Thanks

pastorsoup,

A large Nalgene bottle will definitely fit in the large compartment, no problem. I once stuffed my Heckler & Koch USP .45 full size (inside a Bianchi 7001 holster) into the main compartment, along with an extra mag. It was a little tough getting it out, but it went in okay. :)

I ordered a mini Rolly Poly and attached it to one of the side pockets with a Malice Clip, to hold a water bottle. It's also great for collecting your brass after a shooting/plinking session.

It's a good little gear pack.

I figured it would be too small for my needs, so I've ordered a CountyComm BOB.
