Seriously, what size (length & diameter) sticks do you all prefer?

I prefer 29" long by 1-1/8" diameter.

Thanks!

Dave

Jester,

I'm curious about your reasons for your choices for training & sparring. I do the exact opposite ... I have the size that I like for fighting and bigger/heavier ones for training drills, etc. I do it for strength & conditioning purposes.

Kelvin,

1 1/4" diameter huh? You're disqualified from the poll I'm doing ... I said "sticks" ... not honkin' CLUBS!

Just kidding! You're in good company as far as I'm concerned because my teacher prefers 26" x 1 1/4" sticks.

How about the rest of you?

Dave.

Dave,

I have large hands so I like the bigger diameters. I have a couple of sticks that are 1 3/8" too.

I prefer 26" X 1" most of the time, but when I am doing power drills and hitting the tire 28" X 1-1 1/8" works best for me.

"Beating on each other" means contact training (in pairs - "breaking sticks", or maybe even solo on tire or trees). It also means sparring, but not with my regular students - only with a couple outsiders who don't think it's wacky.

With my regulars we usually use the lighter sticks - technique is stressed over power, and we only spar with noodle sticks in class. We train in a TKD school, so insurance is an issue, and we vary from a 100 lb. 16 yr. old girl to a 200 lb. TKD point fighter. So the normal class is more along the lines of Modern Arnis than Dog Bros. - lotsa disarms & locks & "technique" stuff.

Kelvin,

My teacher has a pair of 1 3/8" diameter sticks. Those are some monsters! I can't imagine sparring with something that big. They must have been the inspiration for the Kombat Instruments Limited motto ... "Don't cleave bone without them".

Jestre,

I got ya now! Makes sense to use the lighter sticks & different format in a commercial school setting. A lot of people that are drawn to a commercial TKD school would run like hell if you did otherwise.

Respectfully,

My favorite stick to hit stuff with is a Mad Dog composite stick, 24" X 0.75". It is fairly heavy for its size. Requires a little handle tape to maintain grip, but man does this thing tear stuff up. Combination of mass and small diameter I guess.

The stick I started training with was 1.5 id with a length of 30inches. These sticks were measured with the old Philippine 1 peso coin which was the standard for measuring within my teachers club. These sticks were octagonal shaped rattan with the joints and skin just barely shaved away to give us the octagonal shape. These suckers go in like ball bats and I still use them for training. I've had them since the mid 70's and they have been semi retired. They only come out to play when the students start getting lazy in their training. Kinda used now for a motivator tool now <G>

My favorite stick to use is the one within arms reach when I need it. Usually I train with something between 26 and 28 inches and about 7/8 to 1" diameter.

Dave,

I'm with you. I like to use heavier sticks for training, usually 1 1/4" in dia., and lighter, faster, and slightly more flexible sticks for fighting. Usually 7/8" to 1" in dia. I like my sticks anywhere from 28" to 30" in length.

When I began training in the FMA, Kelly Worden gave me a big 36" stick, perhaps 1 1/2" in diameter, and told me to practice the first five strikes over and over. Only after a little while was I introduced to the normal 26 inchers. I found I liked the feel of a monster stick.
