Who Has Used a Self Defense Spray?

I just ordered some Fox Labs pepper spray, and was wondering what kind of experiences people have had with sprays. You know Mace, OC, CS, CN, etc.

I have a LEO friend who has 3 occassions to use a spray, and he said it didn't work for him in a single instance. I think he was using S&W MK6, but I'm not sure.

In all three cases the BG's were either drugged up or had histories of mental illness.

I am a LEO. My department carries Cap-Stun (OC). I have used mine about a dozen times. It worked in a little more than half. The ones it didn't work on were mostly paint huffers and people on crack.

Search Practical Tactical and you'll find plenty of accounts, including some from members who've tested it on themselves.

The short answer is sometimes it works very well, but don't count on it.

When I was at the academy we all got sprayed with Cap-Stun (OC). That's our current issue. When I was sprayed it virtually had no effect (except when I had to wash it off  ) whereas others in my class thought they were meeting the devil himself. And no, I'm not a crackhead or meth addict!! ;)

Listen- def-tec pepper spray.
It works every time.
Makes you feel like you are being immolated.
Makes you sad, makes you cry.
Never heard of a bad-guy not being affected.

I recently took a "hit" of Fox. I've "tested" most of the stuff on the market and Fox is far and away the hottest I've felt, so far. Several hours after exposure and decon I was still burning!

Statistics say that about 6% of the population will be minimally affected by OC. I think that Fox will whittle that down some.

Of course you should ALWAYS have a plan B when you use any "less than lethal" option. A good pair of running shoes come to mind.

Howdy!
You're getting (or already got) Fox Labs, so you're going with the most effective OC spray out there.

The main difference between FL and other LEO Strngth OC is the heat rating (Percentages don't mean much)
LEO Strength OC is rated no higher than 2 million SHU (Scoville Heat Units)
Fox Labs is rated at 5.3 million SHU.
Think of SHU as degrees of temperature. FL is more than twice as hot as the other brands.
Someone who'd just decontaminated from LEO Strength OC and then tried Fox Labs said, "Brand X is a cool breeze compared to Fox Labs".
I'd use the Brand name here but Glock Doc got me worried about the Pepper Spray Mafia.
Suffice to say it's definitely LEO stuff.

Fox Labs will slam the eyes shut on EVERYONE. You get 'em in the eyes, they're blind for minutes. Other stuff, you get hit in the eyes and they can "strobe blink" and find you.
It's also fairly easy to get somewhat "used to" the 2 million SHU stuff. I've taken hits from that and while very unpleasent, I could still be a threat.
I've taken a hit from Fox Labs and besides the fact that I was totally blinded, I was definitely out of any fighting mood I might wanna be in.

For what it's worth, I'm a POST Certified instructor in OC use, as well as a manufacturer's instructor for Fox Labs.
(Yeah, that may make you hink I'm biased.. and I guess I am, but not to get rich. I just KNOW the difference between the two and decided to become a dealer for the stuff because I was that impressed.)

There's more info on the link at my signature... not trying to sell anything here...I just happen to have "researched" pepper spray more than most folks.
I just came to this forum to post something else and tripped over this one.

Off to do what I'd intended,

That's the most serious and rational post I've ever read from VG.

Does anyone know, is he feeling OK???

JMX,
SHHHhhhhhh...
I don't usually show up at this forum and I didn't want anyone that DIDN'T know me to know I was "off".
;)

Actually, when it comes to firearms and pepper spray I get all serious-sounding and stuff. I'm still the same as always though.
:D

Oh, and if anyone else reads this....
I saw the video of GlockDoc and someone else taking that exposure. GD's seen his share of OC up close alot, but the other guy ... well.... he was "impressed".

Off to get an MA in Understatement Stating,

It all depends on how you define "works".

I'm a corrections officer and we use the Fox brand OC in our facility. I can't remember a time when it didn't do what we needed it to do. We use it as a deterrant alot. Most of our extractions go quite smoothly with just the threat of OC. When we have to use it, it disables the guy enough for us to control them better and in a safer manner. Less injury for both inmate and officers. I really am a believer in the stuff. We also wear gas masks if the situation warrants and there is not a huge time issue.

FOX works

Just wondering, what happens if there's a breeze going in the wrong direction, or you spray, then have to walk through the mist?

Sph3...
Walking through the mist is considered a secondary exposure.
Depending on the amount you walk through effects can be anywhere from sneezing/runny nose/coughing a bit to possible decapacitation.... but for that to happen, you ... well.... screwed up?
Fox Labs comes in foam, straight stream and cone (fog).
For personal use, I chose the straight stream since it would be less likely to cause a secondary exposure, even if used indoors.
This stuff sprays out about 15+ feet. The downside to the stream is that the "victim" doesn't get much into his lungs.
The cone works great in ideal conditions (which Mr. Murphy makes sure never happens) since that gets in the eyes AND lungs. You take a deep breath of this stuff and you do NOT want to breathe anymore! (I had to be reminded, as did several other police officers who took the instructor's course)
Foam is good if you're only going to use it indoors. There's virtually no chance of a secondary exposure but there's virtually no chance it'll get into their lungs either. There's been some reports of people scraping off the foam and tossing it back at the good guy, but I don't personally know of any cases.

Bottom line is if you carry it, carry a straight stream. If you use it, try and keep the wind at your back if possible but if you have doubts, spray them and move out of the way of the fog.
Actually, you should move in an "L" shaped manner after spraying someone since if they're planning on going after you, they'll go to the last place that they saw you.... but they'll be blind.

Wondering how long I can keep up this serious stuff,

Hey,
Blood Sucking Scurrying Varmint...
I've had the ASP pepper spray, as well as the Bodyguard models. I can't find anybody around my area that carries Fox, so I'm gonna be sending you out a money order soonest...
The next time my neighbor's pitbull comes bouncing out of his door without a leash and looks lovingly at my crotch, well, one of two things is gonna happen, and one of them aint gonna be pleasant for him...
;)

Hiya Kelt!

This seems as if I've turned this post into a commercial for my site, and that wasn't my intention.
I just believe in the stuff.
Anyhow, if you send something off to me, please drop me an email to let me know since I don't go to the PO Box every day.
It might not hurt to let me know what you want, so I can make sure to have in stock as well.

Please use the OC with care. As for dogs, I think it's more humane to just shoot the dog than to have it run around with its head feeling as if it's on fire for an hour.

Fox Labs is WICKED!
:D

As a deputy sheriff I purchased the first can of Mace sold in the State of Colorado way back in the dark ages. I used it the same day and knew beyond a doubt that I owned the greatest innovation in Law Enforcement since the Radio.
