and what did you come home with?

I was only able to make it on Friday, but it was memorable. I did have a particular maker in mind, but those available from him had made a noticable increase out of my price range in a rather short period of time... something to do with him letting it be known that he his cutting back his knife making to spend time with the grandkids, go fishing, etc. Durn market whims.:grumpy:

I got to see many wonderful customs and makers, most notably three pieces from Montejano that were simply mind-blowing. Worth the price of admission alone to be able to see them. Darrell Ralph had some gorgeous pieces, and Chuck Gedraitis' knives looked even better in person. Don Hanson III of course had a table full of his usual awesomeness. Too many others that I can remember at this moment.

I did get to see some BF running buddies... Danbo and Ren showed their mugs in public. Charles Marlow joined us for dinner along with a couple of USN guys (Bulldog and JD memory is failing me at this moment on names). It was great meeting some new knife knuts.

My take from the show?..... Bought a Peter Atwood tactical (hate that word) whistle.:D

Let's hear from those who went, and more importantly... what did you get?

Hi Mongo,
Good to see you at the show...I was right next to A.T.
Being a bit narrow aimed, brought home some really nice Sambar Stag and Amber dyed Sambar Stag from Mother of PEarl Company...oh yeah and some beautiful blacklip pearl, whitelip pearl and a set of goldlip pearl future handle slabs.....Guess I'm more destined to buy supplies to make 'em more than collect 'em nowdays.....

I was there on saturday. It was my first show so I wasen't really sure what to expect, but I was very impressed. All of the makers there had beautiful pieces and were very friendly. To be able to walk amongst all of those very talented people and to walk up to a table and have the knifemaker give you the okay to handle things that you only dream of was quite an experience.

Plus I walked away with a fantastic little Bud Nealy fixed blade with Mr. Nealy's super versitile M.C.S. sheath.

Hi Mongo. Thanks for stopping by!

I was buried in my 'studio' for both days. I had the advantage AND priviledge of having Leta Blanton work with me as an assistant. She really made my work easier, and by extension, better.

Saw a number of forum members. I was not that available if you didn't catch my eye, as I had it pinned to a screen or a viewfinder.... ;)

I have many images to edit, print, mail, and when I am done, to post. News when I do.

  • Best in show: Joe Kious folder engraved by Ron Skaggs (Asian-themed engraved piece)
  • Best Fixed Blade: Don Hanson (Incredible!)
  • Best Folding knife: Kaj Emberetsen (8-blade Folder)
  • Best tactical: Jody Muller (another commission like Don Hanson's)
  • Judges award: Ken Steigerwalt (artistry in spades)

From my perspective, the organizers: Ed and Kathy Wormser, did, once again, an outstanding job of accomodating their table clients and the collectors. I am always impressed at how Ed goes out of his way to make things right.

As a benchmark though, I had about 25% less work come my way this year than last. I heard laments from many makers as well.

I have SO much work in my other job this week, that editing will take me longer than I wished.

My highpoint was a one-on-one dinner with Mr. Don Guild. What a priviledge to learn from this man. :)

Mongo, good to see ya. Also good to see a bunch of you guys there and thanks for stopping by for a visit. Chicago was a good time, great show, although a bit slower than last year (I brought a couple pieces home ;) ). Coop was busy with the camera and I'm looking forward to his photo show:thumbup:

PS, Danbo was all over the place
