Hope I'm posting in the right category! I'm looking to start learning how to make lanyard beads. I picked up a lathe and a handful of rod stock in 3/4" diameter.

I'm looking for some advice on what RPMs and tooling to use ... Carbide inserts, HSS, etc.... on Copper, Titanium, Brass and Damascus to shave down the surface just a tad for a nice finish, and make lines and grooves for aesthetics. As well as if I maintain the same RPM when drilling a 1/4" hole.

Thanks in advance!

Yes I do but probably not much help to you as I don't use a lathe or anything. I just cut a chunk and roundish it (more or less) off on the grinder and then hit the buffer. Not very technical about it.

That’s a great looking bead! Do you drill the hole before or after grinding it to shape?

You can do wood, ivory, bone, and softer stones on a small pen turning lathe. Shape and size are up to your imagination.

I’ve made micarta and g10 beads. I cut out a square piece then drill a hole the size of one of those expanding Dremel rubber drum sanding holders. I put the cut out piece on the drum sanding bit and turn on the Dremel and just use aggressive grit until it’s round then work my way up. Works pretty well.
