who here wrote this?

Why did they stick it in 'Humor'? this is a deadly serious subject consuming endless man-hours of forumites time. this should be way ahead of any thoughts of bird-flu, global warming, and even the most deadly threat to civilisation pre-zombie - the 'lawyer' and their evil assistants - 'politicians'.

It's 'humor' alright; the author has a 30 carbine on the cover of the book. OK, I know with soft or hollow points the little 30 is quite devastating, but I still prefer a good 308.
Bag em and tag em, people; I want these things mashed down the first shot.

we used to have 81mm's mounted under a .50 browning on our 82 footer patrol boats back in the old days, couple rounds of tracer to make sure they were pointed in the right direction, then some WP or HE from the mortar would take out the zombies. you can fire them direct as well as indirectly, make purdy booms, don't they? they use 25mm chain guns nowadays, which also do a number on them.

Was that Fence or French?

kronckew,

I personally find the NATO 81mm mortar system one of the most efficient weapons extant. All system components and a couple of cases of ammo will easily fit into a jeep-sized vehicle, and in an emergency, one can even be set up by a single person.

The amount of firepower this 100-lb system can bring to bear is astonishing. I really wish I had a picture to share of the pillar of smoke going up after battalion mortar fire for six minutes with WP!

John, off to finish Mil History project due today

81 MM can't compare with a Marine plioted F-4 Phantom, Ball's to the ground hearing before seeing till too late and he drop's some napalm .talk about smoke:eek: :D

i used to know a marine pliot, he'd xferred to the CG 'cause he was too mean to be a marine anymore. he flew a helo off our icebreaker's teeny little flight deck in all kindsa weather not fit for man nor beast. our motto was that you gotta go out, you don't have to come back.....fortunatley he always did. never dented the flight deck either. dented a couple of russians tho.

Actually, lb for lb, the 81mm is considerably more effective than an F-4.

never fired an f-4, fired an 81 tho, so i'm prejudiced & agree with spec. much more primevil feeling to firing yourself vs. playing fao with an f-4. safer too.

Well, you figure a weapons system small enough that, if necessary, it can be broken down and manported by a squad, including enough ammo to give somebody a headache. If you have a truck, you can bring 2-4 and enough ammo to keep the wolves at bay for quite a while, or make a hell of an ambush.

You can set one up in 90 seconds. A good crew can be dropping rounds about then. Each round can reach from 4500 to 5600 meters. A decent crew can drop 6 rounds a minute or more on target, sustained. Each round will have a 90% "kill or suppress" ability within 35 meters, with a possibility of hitting enemy troops as far out as 75 meters or so from impact.

Compare this to an F-4. Sure, greater range, but many times the support personnel needed, literally months or years more training time needed to reach expert user status, thousands of times more expensive, and you do NOT have the ability to break the Phantom II down into 300 smaller components, each useful in their own right.

Each one has a mission, but in general, I'd rather have 300 M252 mortar systems. :)

I like the marshmellow shooter on the footer. I'd like to mount one on my bike. THAT would be fun riding.
