has a son, daughter, or grandchild, who would like a box of oddball knives for free? There are the knives:

Case 2 blade (large blade has had the tip broke off and reground, not by me)
Imperial Ireland trapper
Klein electrician knife (probably made by Camillus)
2 blade marked USA
Schrade zytel lockblade
Large Texas Toothpick (maker unknown) 1 handle wood, 1 handle horn or bone
and whatever else I can dig up.

Post here why I should send them to you. Connie will decide the best reason, and they will ship on the 15th. This offer will end on the 12th.

Cool giveaway, and thanks!
My 12 year old cousin is in Scouts. I don't think any of these kids own, nor are being taught how to use a knife. I've shown Chris some of my collection, and he's fascinated. Planning on taking him camping when the weather cooperates, and teaching him how to safely use knives to make a fire and some other bush-crafty skills.
He and his fellow scouts need real knives that they can use with successful outcomes, not cheap and dull knock-offs. I gave my cousin a "tester" multi-tool to see how he treats it. He's used two of my Hawks and even got to throw one of them!
I asked if he has used his knife when camping, he said he left them at home. He has yet to see the power and performace of a real knife, IMO.

Only one reply? Nobody wants a "box of beaters" for free? You never can tell what else might show up in the box!

Not an entry, but just wanted to say thanks for your generosity and kindness in helping keep our younger generations acclimated to quality cutlery.

Hi John -

Well - you already gifted my youngest granddaughter a nice little Spyderco after she showed up with a pair of fingernail clippers in her pocket so she had a knife like Pop-pop's (that's me....)

So you gave her this:

(John had ground this knife down so it has no edge or point....)

Emily still grabs that knife every time she comes over and she carries it around the house with her.

I have a grandson on the way, but I did not want to get into a contest for a boy that is several years away from getting his first knife....

best regards -

Very generous of you John. My boys are 7 and 5 and I can't wait to get them their own knives but I just don't think that they are ready yet. I keep hoping that my oldest will show the signs that he's ready but he still scares me. In the fall, he had a chance to whittle a bar of soap with a wooden "knife" in cub scouts. He wasn't too willing to take my advice. He just wanted to bore a hole in in with the tip! I've been thinking a lot about what I'll get him for his first knife. Probably a fixed blade. Maybe I'll put a handle on a 2/0 Mora and blunt the tip. I think he's a ways away from his first slip joint.

A very generous offer John; I really like the idea of gifting the knives to kids who are ready. My own children are grown and on their own (no grandchildren yet) but I’d give the box of knives to my neighbor’s son (he is 10). I’ve given him a couple of cheap knives thus far (with his parents’ permission) – one for his tackle box (he is an avid fisherman) and one pocket knife that he uses to carve with. So far he has made a walking stick, a slingshot, and a very simple bow. He wants to make an atlatl next, but hasn’t started that project yet.

James (the neighbor’s boy) is a budding knife addict who is quick to show off his prized possessions if given the opportunity. I believe his current “grail knife” is a muskrat skinner: his grandfather traps muskrats (and coons) and James is determined to skin one out this winter (he’s frequently spoken of his need to have a skinning knife like Pa Pa’s). Last winter, James ran the trap line with his grandfather and he is very proud of the fact that he caught 3 muskrats in traps he set. He was proud as a peacock when we ate one of his muskrats last January – reminding us (several times) that he had caught that particular rat.

Whoever is chosen to be the recipient of your most generous offer is well on their way to a lifetime of love and respect for mankind’s oldest tools. I commend you for your kindness and if James should win, I promise to do my very best to accurately convey the pride he’d demonstrate while showing off his box full of knives.

even if I'm not elegeble to play, damn nice idea you have there, but If Canadians are allowed to play..,

I've got two daughters, 5 and 6, too young, but I am trying to get them into knives I let them look at my knives. no touching though. they each have 1 pink and one purple vic classic that they are allowed to handle, but not actually open the blade. It wouldn't be for them though, I have a nephew/second cousin that is 13 and has the knife bug, wants to be a maker some day, and has even already re-handled an old machete that I gave him using hand tools and in his bedroom no less. his family is not very well of, and I try to encourage him as much as possible whenever we get over to see them. most of his tools and knives have come from me. he loves to tinker and he loves knives. so a box of old knives would be his dream esp if any need a little TLC.

I have a cousin who has 6 kids from 12 down to 1. They are hunting/fishing/country folks who would definitely get a ton of use out of the knives. My cousin recently broke his leg and ankle in several spots and will be out of work for quite some time. They are dependant on him since his wife homeschools their kids so I know times will be tight around there. And they also live in Arkansas so where better to send the toothpick :) All that to say I would hate for the 13 year old in the above post not to have some of the knives. I know shipping would be more and you are already being very generous, but would you consider sharing the gift with several different families? Just a thought. Thanks for doing this. Very kind indeed.
