I was wondering if Kershaw uses any specific HT method on the ZT0100??? I like the idea of a Kershaw CPM3V fixed blade, but at prices equal with a Fehrman it brings up a huge question. Is the HT on par with Fehrman's????

Absolutely, sorry I didn't clarify. I'll give you guys the background. I am thinking about trading into a ZT0100, due to the CPM3V, but was wondering what I would really be getting. All the 3V info out there praises it, but specifically praises Fehrmans. Seeing that Fehrman has a proprietary HT on 3V, similar to the HT Busse does to INFI and Swamp Rat does to SR101 etc...... I was wondering what HT facilities Kershaw uses. I know that the ZT line is a partnership of some sort with Strider, so I was wondering if the HT for 3V is through them or Paul Bos etc.....

I also have a quick q for you Kershaw users out there. Do you have to have a reciept to use the Kershaw Warranty??? I ask b/c trading into the ZT0100 means no reciept. Thanks.

H/t is done to Crucible spec. It is fantastic. Be careful of proprietary H/t claims. I'm not dissing anyone here, just make sure you are getting the facts on heat treating . Do a side by side test or get hard data. It's funny at almost every show I go to someone always has to tell me about either there or someone elses super delux H/t that turns regular __________ into a super steel. "Why my knife will cut a curl off of anything in the show Hee Hee". Though some steels can I guess be slightly enhanced by some new breakthrough process ,99% of it is bullshit and is just a means to hustle you out of your cash. I'm not refering to Busse,Fehrman or anyone specificly. I am only throwing a caution flag up for those gullable enough to believe un documented and unproven (independant/blind) claims. Crucible makes the stuff and has some of the best Metalurgists in the buisiness, I prefer referencing there specs untill proven differently.

007 Agent ZZero,

The only way to really get an idea on how the two heat treatments compare would be to get Kershaw and Fehrman to make two identical blades with their respective heat-treatments. So long as grind on the ZT0100 doesn't match anything Fehrman's fine family has ever done, you'll be testing geometry more than anything else.

I'd just go for it and trade into the ZT0100 if the knife appeals to you. I have Kershaws with 13C26, SG-2, ZDP-189, 154CM, and 440A (and had one in AUS-6) and my brother has one in S30V and all of them are top performers for their grind and steel type. Why would they nail S30V, ZDP-189, CPM-D2, SG-2, 154CM, S90V, S60V, 13C27, and VG-10 and then wimp out on CPM-3V?

Thanks for chiming in guys. Ken, I was hoping that Kershaw used either Crucible's or Paul Bos' specifications so thank you for providing that information. The only reason I was skeptic in the first place is CPM3V is so different from most of the steels Kershaw uses. Thanks a lot to nygiantsfan, that piece of information definetly pushed me over the edge. BTW your avatar gave me nightmares, seriously, woke up crying "help me the fat man has come to get me............."
Goodbye Swamp Rat Mini Mojo, hello ZT0100 3V goodness........

Thanks again guys.

How do you guys heat treat ZDP-189? I remember hearing something about ZDP being best heat treated in Japan, since it is a Japanese (Hitachi) steel.

I have a ZDP cyclone and all I can say is WOW!!!! This takes and holds the sharpest edge I have ever used. It really surprised me that I could polish the edge will little effort and keep such great results. It's been the #1 EDC for about a month, no touch ups.
