Hey, folks...

Just curious. Who is AC Michaels?

I have seen many Damascus knives with his (her) stamp on them, and they fetch a pretty penny.

I have tried a web search, and checked a few knifemaker guilds, but cannot find anything on this name.

Thanks.

Put AC Michaels knife maker on google and you will be able to go to his web side of knifes KT

KT, I did a search and found no such maker website. There are LOTS of references to the work, though.

I'd be willing to wager 'AC Michaels' is a psuedonym for an overseas knife-making workshop and they are producing VERY inexpensive damascus/fileworked pieces. They are all over eBay and go for far less than a renowned makers.

A good start into handmade knives, but not in an upper level.

If I am wrong, I stand corrected.

I took a look and I can say the stuff is crap, and I don't expect to be corrected. Coop is right and slightly more refined in his response.

Been looking everywhere (Google included), and cannot find anything about this person.

A few knife shops carry his stuff. Anyone have the "inside dibs" on tbe knives?

Are the Damascus knives really junk?

I purchased one at a great price (in my opinion), and the Damascus steel seems pretty hard...and holds a good edge.

How would you check to know if his Damascus steel is "junk"? Can anyone have the superior knowledge and x-ray vision to look at three Damascus steel blanks and know which one of the three is "crap"...just by looking at it?

I purchased it hoping it was better than any overseas, "Made in China/Pakistan" aluminum can forged garbage.

Appreciate the reasoned (and non-emotional/unsupported) responses.

Hi Ray,

Make no mistake. That's a handmade knife, made by workers or an individual with LOTS of talent. That it is billed as an individual is misleading, but that's the nature of advertising.

In your future you will get to handle other handmade knives, and you will get to know the individual maker whom you can actually talk to and discuss the work. See and hear their passion. Handle their craft.

You pay more for this aspect. Right now you have some of that, but with no trail or accountability.

For whatever price you paid, it's a good start. Next quest: US knife show with top quality, if you haven't already. You will see a difference.

In the meantime, enjoy your purchase. You made the real human craftsman (somewhere) pleased that you enjoy this, and probably put some food on someone's table.

He has a site . On yahoo if you put in Arizona Custom knifes he comes up. Dont know if his items are any good. KT

I am surprised Arizona Custom Knives is carrying them, maybe (And I am just shooting from the hip) they are catering to different markets. Producing various levels of quality? I Agree with Coop and Erik BTW.

Raymond, head on down to the pier in the city and talk to the guys at "We Be Knives" about the custom damascus knives they carry there. They have some from local makers there and are very knowledgeable. They get a TON of tourists in there, so if you present yourself as a local and a serious buyer they will be very helpful.

I have six such knives. Being a Knifemaker myself and using both my own blades and others, I believe that all of the AC Micheals knives that I have had the same Blade maker. The Damascus is very good quality/ I don't think all the knives are made by the same person. The workmanship varies from superb to sloppy , but all of the blades are very good. I don't own a Rockwell hardness tester but drilling one of these blades without anealing is quite a task. My guess is these knives are alot like what you would get from "The Bone Collector". The same Craftsman making the blades with several differant craftsman building the knives. A leather company making the sheaths and a U.S. company finishing up and marketing. Kinda like a Ghost writer, no one person is accountable. This is just my own educated guess. I believe that alot of the materials come from the Middle East region. Maybe India or Pakistan. Water Buffalo and Camel bone are definetly used. I also agree with Coop in that these are made by some talented people. Stoy Hughes
