Who is Buddy (Bud) Weston?

Actually, I know who Buddy is - I just want to know a lot more about him and his knives (the info on his website is a bit sparse). I purchased a folder from him at the 2001 Canadian Knifemakers Guild Show. Is it just my uneducated opinion, or does he make a really nice knife?

Any other owners of Buddy Weston knives out there? Please share whatever info you have. Thank you.

I bought my first Weston, a small fixed blade, a few years ago at a CKG show. He said he was going to Europe [Czecklosovakia I think] and wasn't expecting to come back for a while. Luckily for us he did. The knife, which I still have, is really nicely ground, tapered tang, engraved bolster, filework, wood scales. Just a lovely knife, and surprisingly inexpensive. He is now recognised, I think, as a hot, rising maker, especially his folders, but someone more expert than I can speak about that, like George or Les. Praise from George is high praise indeed.
I'm happy to hear that he's beginning to make more exotic gents because that's precisely what I'm looking for. His larger tactical folders have a distictive, mean and attractive look to them. There are a few very nice ones out there. There was a unique one on Ebay that like an idiot I let pass. I think Les Robertson has a few beauties as well. If Les carries him and thinks he's good and good value, that really is a recommendation.

Thanks for the quick response, George and HJK. I'm so glad to hear such positive comments about Buddy. I showed the gent's folder I purchased at the show to a jeweller friend of mine who examined it under a loupe. He was VERY impressed with the workmanship. Buddy told me at the show that he will stay in Czechoslovakia to make knives because that way he can actually make a living at it. Any other information about Bud Weston knives would be much appreciated! If anyone is interested, I can upload a digital shot of the folder I purchased - as soon as I figure out how to do that.

Hey CRF,

I brought home 5 of Bud's knives from the CKG Show.

Bud is definetly an "up and comer". His work is excellent and his prices reflect his quality and his understanding that while his work is as good as many well known makers. He is not one of them.

Consequently, now is the time to purchase his work.

FIVE knives? Hey, that's all the encouragement I need!

I only purchase knives for personal pleasure - if they also turn out to be an investment, that's just a small bonus.

Thanks, Les. BTW, I think I probably purchased the most ornate gent's folder that Bud had on his table that weekend. If it never increases a dime in value, I'll still be delighted with my purchase! How do I find out a little bit more about my knife? About the blade, the filework, the engraving, the wood scales, etc.? At this point in my collecting, the technical stuff doesn't mean much to me yet, but I'd like to have it for future reference in the file I keep on each knife.

Indeed, in this forumite's opinion, Bud Weston is a fine maker to keep an eye on. Through my anal eyes, I see little or nothing to critique on his blades. Excellent fit and finish. Walk and talk...all that stuff. Razor sharp. Fair price? Quite the understatement gentlemen.

Les, If you can find a few more, they'll go fast I'm sure.

Oops!

I apologize.

Thanks, David.

It was when I spoke to him.
And also, many years before, when my Mom was born there.

I owned several Bud Weston folders before. I have moved on to collect only fixed blades now, but if I ever decide to purchase a folder I will definitely get one from Weston. I still have one folder left with San Mai steel and carbonfiber over anodized titanium handle. It is very hard, almost impossible to find any drawbacks in his knives. the variety of different deigns that he makes is endless. Some of his folders feature liner locks almost as thik as the frame lock on Sebenza. I also like that on some knives he has a blade starting very deep in the handle and a thumb stud far from the end of handle. First of all it produces tremendous leverage for opening and liminates side to side blade play completely. At the last Canadian show Bud sold very well, he told me that he was very pleased with the number of knives that he sold. Unfortunately that means that it is harder now to bargain a very low price out of him like I used to be able too. I am glad that now Bud gets the recognition he deserves. Would be cool to see an article on him in Blade magazine.
