If I can find a source for some inexpensive tatami cutting matts, I think I'm going to try to pretend like I know how to use a sword. My AK is on it's way, so I have to start thinking about this a little bit.
Does anyone know where I can a few? Also, how many is reasonable to cut through for a beginner with a Wak? I think I might be able to cut through 4.

i have some russian olive trees i need to prune. some limbs 3" or so. i'm going to get someone to do a photo shoot of me beating the crap out of those trees and the sword

Then I will buy your used sword at a steep discount so you dont have to look at the blemishes anymore.

They appear to have fairly inexpensive matts here.
BUT they warn that it may dangerous to try this without an experienced instructor, so I might not do this after all. I'll have to think about it.

They say it is "dangerous" because they dont want to get sued when some schmuck chops into himself or others while attempting to cut with a sword.
The mats cannot hurt you.:D

That's true. Anyone can screw up. There was a guy at one of the cutting competition who really got himself good in the leg. And I mean as in probably would have bled to death in the old days. And they don't just let anyone in those competitions (I think it was an ABS comp.) I'm sure I'll be alright if I take precautions, and I'm sure the kind folks in the sword forum can give me some advise. We'll see.

i always wear stove pipes on my legs when i test busses,

That's too F' in funny.....The tin Skunk:D LMAO

When using big blades you have to take nto account the momentum factor and the inability to slow the blade down after full power swings. I have narrowly missed my shins several times over the years with big heavy blades. You try to always swing at an angle and always keep the leg that is in the direction of the swing, back. Also pay attention so you can move quickly if need be. Do it like if you were fighting, remain light footed.

Skunks tin can idea is good. I just wrap my shins with live rats to be used as explosive armor

Good idea, Cobalt - go with the toughest thing you can find...:p

Thank for the suggestions. I'm also going to take a look at some of the cutting competition videos before I try it, IF I try it.
