Who is making what you think is the best value in a handmade folder or straight knife

Rather large can of worms you want to open,
that I don't feel will be very productive other than folks listing their fave makers.

Price is not everything of course just curious to hear some thoughts....

First, welcome to Blade Forums, and to the Handmade and Custom Forum.

Your question borders on impossible, because of the diverse opinions (at least one for every single person who enters here, and some have multiples to match each of their personalities).:D If I could suggest like Google, try to "narrow your search". Also, value is really subjective and once again defined differently by different people.

To be more succinct, let me refer you back to post #3, the can of worms part;)

Don't forget, you are welcome here any time.

Paul

I don't think it's an inappropriate question to ask, but coming as a very first question to be asked by a brand spanking new member...

Now, if there were a little more transparency behind the motivation behind the question-asker, I'd be inclined to be interested. There isn't, so I'll back my bros POV and state my case here, then leave it at that.

I am certainly not trying to open a can of worms and appreciate the welcomes to the forum. I'm fairly new to posting on forums in fact that might be the first post I have ever made.
At any rate for example Dick Atkinson who is no longer making knives use to sell a great liner lock folder for about $150.00. I carry one I bought from Dick probably 6 or seven years ago and it is just a great knife and a lot of knife for the money.

Great call, Peter!

I suggest we fill this thread with 'I ams'!

Seize the day, knife makers! :)

better than shills, Bob!

In my opinion my friend Mike Snody puts out a great value in his BOSS series of knives.

That is no disrespect to any other maker out there but what Mike puts out for $150 is hard to beat in the handmade knife from one of the top makers in the industry.

I have known many great custom knife makers and none of them would even think about making a $150 blade.

We all know Mike has a big set of cajones and swims against the current all the time.

I'm not a great knife maker, but considering I've given away 10+ knives for free as testers, I think I have the "value" part covered. My feedback thus far has been very good, but I'm not quite ready to sell until I have some longer term feedback.

true Bob, I totally agree. It pains my heart to see this forum turned into a sales arena as has been its slant as of late, but ya gotta admit the quoted post is worth the price of admission lol!

I have bought quite a few on the exchange from quite a few of our makers. They are all GREAT values. I never sell knives and don't worry about resale just usability and ergonomics. I have yet to be disappointed in a knife bought in the makers' for sale section.

^^^ I will second this. Some tremendous bargains to be had in the Makers for Sale exchange area. I am quite amazed at what some of these guys price their knives at. It sometimes seems to me they are practically giving them away.

As a noob to custom handmade knives Id like to chip in with a question of my own. What is a good price for say a 12" overall 7" blade something or other in a good steel.

I've never owned a custom knife before. And would really like one. Doesnt have to be fancy just functional with a good forger .

What would I be looking at in that range . I like semi flat grinds and use would be outdoors . Not so much bushcraft but just a solid utility knife.

I prefer carbon steel but a good mid grade stainless with high carbon content would be fine .

ball park price is all im looking for.

Best value depends on what characteristics you value: design/style, blade material, other materials, fit & finish, egonomics, the type of job it is meant for, innovation, etc etc. Most of those are subjective/personal preference not objective. If you defined what you wanted & then found several makers who fit your criteria then you could find reviews of their work to try to compare them, otherwise there are just too many good makers for the question to have a meaningful answer.

Would suggest you check out Gossman Knives (he has a forum here) and Martin Knives of Texas. Both good value IMO.
