Who is testing for JS & MS at Blade?

Good and timely thread Peter.
I understand there's only a few testing for Mastersmith this year however many going for their Journeysmith certification.

Thought some may like some insight as to whose judging this year so will post some information from a thread Dan Cassidy created over on the CKCA forum.

I will be going for my JS stamp. Have still got a lot of work to do but should still be ok. New job has eaten up so much of my time:(
Will have 2 x 1084 hunters, 1 with Sheoak and 1 with Ringed Gidgee, a 5160 bowie which will have a wooden handle of some sort, a 1075 recurve fighter with walrus and a coffin shaped frame handled W2 fighter with mammoth ivory....at this stage. Some subject to change without warning. Fly home from work next Wed night and fly out the following Wed to Atlanta...heaps of time :)
Cheers Bruce

New Job? Whatcha talking about?
You staying in the states a few weeks after blade again to tour makers shops?
Knock em dead in the judging room Bruce.

Just to satisfy curiosity, why is a non-knifemaker serving as "head judge"? Seems like peer review would be limited to those who serve as experts in the field. - You wouldnt elect a board member as chief of surgery at a hospital..
Thanks,
David

David, on the JS,
BR Hughes does not vote but organizes and make sure the voting process moves in a timely fashion that is for the good of the applicants and the judges themselves. He also makes sure that it is a fair an impartial vote.

B R Hughes has probably forgotten more about knives than many knifemakers will ever know about them.
You don't have to be a surgeon to know if a surgeon has messed up a surgery.

Much appreciated! Thanks

You really think so?

B.R. brings an eye to the judging that is not entirely modern in it's way of seeing, keeping the flame of Bill Moran burning bright in everyone's eye.....imo, of course.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

B.R. Hughes is one of the suviving founders of the ABS and one of the most proloific writers on the subject. He teaches the seminars on how to pass both the journeyman and masters tests. Almost without exception, when I have had to inform an applicant that their knives have failed the test, they admit that they have never attended one of his seminars. Big mistake on their part.

You don't have to be a boxer to be either a referee or a judge. B.R. doesn't make knives but if he was ever called upon to be a judge, I can assure you that he would both knowledgeable and impartial.

Cheers,

TV

I would recommend BR's seminar on how to pass the journeyman and master's test to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of knives. I found his seminars VERY worthwhile from the collector's point of view.

The paramount qualification for being a knife judge should be knowledge whether it be knifemaker, collector, dealer or whoever.
