Just got this last week and was working on it over the weekend.
(to see what it used to look like check out Mineral Mountain's page for the K-19 bowie)

I have always wanted a big Mineral Mountain peice to take out into the woods with me. Thier reputation for hard-using big bad-ass blades is well deserved. I snagged this K-19 from another collector who was moddifying it I think more towards the tactical philosophy. He had blackened out the brass hardware with chemicals, that combined with the parkerization made it one big black bowie. It was cool, but I wanted to personalize it myself so I took it in a more traditional direction.
I used varying degrees of sandpaper to take the parkerization completly off the grind-lines and to restore the finish in the Brass. In the middle of taking the finish off the flats of the blade I got to a point where it was in-between, sort of a rutsicated look...and I like it, so I stopped sanding and started polishing. I got a dremmel so I used the buffing wheel and some compound as well as some light abrasives (fake steel wool) and finally some Flitz.
Then into the vice she went. I would have liked to have done something more radical, but I think the filework I did kinda fits the rustic overall look of the knife.
I washed the handle and it brought out the grain in the micarta much more. I like the handle a lot, very very comfy wich is mucho important on a big heavy knife like this. In a quick hand in hand test I was pretty sure the thing weighed more than my Practical Wakasashi.
Now I gotta take her into the woods and take down a few trees....bears....whatever gets in my way I guess. I will report back with a fucntional analysis of this monstrosity as soon as I put the edge to something cuttable.
oh yeah...I sharpened it too....its sharp, real sharp
