I just put a handle on an old single bit axe head i've had for some time. First i cleaned it up as best as i could, it turned out pretty good. One thing i did find, on the left side of the head, looking down on it, there is 3 1/2 and under that is a M can you tell me who might have built it? thanks

Pics would help tremendously.

I have one of those. It's a great user; pretty thin profile and it takes and holds an edge very well. There were some posts awhile back about these and I think the consensus was that they are Collins made in Mexico.

Here's mine. It worked loose a couple of months ago and I still haven't got around to re-hafting.

I restored one of my brother-in-law's that is identical to yours, trailmaker. Sharpened up nicely, but seemed just a little soft to me.

Interesting, mine seems to hard if anything. I worry that the bit will chip or crack but it's held up so far.

Nice job, trailmaker. I was searching for those very threads, but couldn't seem to locate them.

I'm not sure that we're sure about what these are...are we???

THAT IS the one i have as well, thanks for the picture. My neighbor gave me a double bit axe the other day, the makers name must have been ''CHIN'' , ha,ha. actually i they left off the A as in CHINA :] Little postscript on my single bit M marked axe. Its going to be interesting how it holds up,it was left in a camp fire, or camp fires, for who knows how long, and eventally i found it and decided to see how good the head was/is going to be.
