Who made mauls stamped "M6"?"

I bought this "Vintage Collins M6" wood splitting maul head off ebay ... as per the seller ...
When I received the maul head the only markings on it were "M6" and "Wear Safety Goggles." I asked the seller how they know this was a "Collins" maul. They said they know from seeing handles in M6 stamped mauls which had a paper label saying "Collins." I am not able to independently verify this from any other sources. Does anyone know if there were "vintage collins mauls" which were simply stamped only with an "M6" and "Wear Safety Goggles?" Wearing safety goggles seems the antithesis of vintage.

There are zillions of these tools marked with letter & number designations. I suspect that multiple makers were producing these. I have never seen a explanation of what these letter/number combinations mean. Sometimes I think they indicate the steel type. Other times they may represent a manufacturing run. I just don't know for sure.

I have one of those I picked up for 5 bucks recently. if I had to guess, I would say it is most likely a newer Collins made in Mexico. At least mine sure looks similar to the modern Collins mauls I see in hardware stores. This is just a personal guess though. Maybe a more modern Ames True Temper as well?

I have bought a bunch of stuff form the auction sight and seen WAAAY more ads- unless you see what you need to see in a pic, it ain't true. I bought a "Vintage NOS Collins" paper label early on- had INDIA stamped under the poll................ Seen alot of ads listing something to the effect of "Collins made in Collinsville, Conn."------- but the pics were a much later heads simply stamped COLLINS with the box around it. Many sellers are less than forthright and you need to be on guard.

I sometimes sell there as well but you can be sure that any warts are in picture and explained in ad.

As far as the M6 stamping- don't know but the bit about the goggles makes it a newer head, likely 80's and later.

My experience to date on ebay has been pretty good. From now on I believe nothing unless I can personally read it in the photos...even if its a high-ranked seller.
