I was looking over/admiring my 18" AK, and started wondering who made it. on the blade are the letters S. B. but the period after the B is about 2/3 the way up the B, and the one on the S about 1/3 the way up the S. Below the letters is what looks like a rising sun. Anyone know?
Thanks,
Quad

slightly above the joint (i'm not really sure what else to call it) in the B, which is a little bit more than halfway up but a little bit less than 2/3 on more careful analysis. Thanks for all your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Quadro, we were teasing each other about Sonny and Cher and the dot by the B. Congrats on a great blade. I like Sher very much.

Sher builds a mighty fine blade.

They all make fine blades. It depends on what feature you prefer. I liked Durba and Kesar handles, they seem to have made them a little smaller than Sanu or Bura. Sanu and Bura make their blades with bold, straight lines. Kesar's were a bit more rounded with a softer apperance. Depends on what you like.

They're all durable and made for use. :)

I agree, Bruise. Plus, Sanu's "baby-grand-piano-leg" handles are very distinctive. (I love Sanu's blades but hate his handles.) My guess is that forging lines that straight and angles that distinct is very difficult. Hence, it's their way of showing off their skill.

Both Sher's work and Kumar's work is distinctive from the other kamis, too. They both seem to put a little bobble in the grind at the tip (not a big one, but it appears to be pretty consistent on the 5 Kumars and 7 Shers that have passed through my hands). Their handles are more generous than those of most of the other kamis. Their rendition of the "eye of the dove" cho seems to be distinctive, too.

What I find amusing is that these sibling rivals' blades are so similar to each other (now that Sher seems to have gotten off of his "how thick can I make it" kick). I wonder if they are aware of that?

I think he got off that kick when metal became scarcer and shipping became tougher and expensive.

Is Shankar using the trisul (trident) now?

The stuff I picked up at the khonvention was marked K.S. with the trisul.

I'm sure this is revenge for all of the strange stuff we send them - katanas and seaxes and pukkos (oh my!) - when all they want to make is a good 'ole 3/4 inch thick khuk. :p
