Who Made This Sheath?

... a 49Er knife which ceased production some 33 years ago in a modern "recent" white DU box with equally modern sheath which was not the sheath pattern that was originally issued with the 49Er Series of knives, should make one's hairs stand on the back of the neck somewhat.....To my knowledge Schrade were not even involved with the Ducks Unlimited Program and their 'Special Edition Series' until after the 49Er <mid/late 70's> ceased production 79/80.Has the 49Er knife the genuine benchmark individual cutlers mark on the butt?...I've seen those sheaths with other genuine Schrade DU series knives and I have a similar white box DU Special Edition 165OT DU from the 1990's. I dont think Schrade made their later sheaths 'in house' in either case.

We cant comment on current auctions....However in general terms, a 49Er knife which ceased production some 33 years ago in a modern "recent" white DU box with equally modern sheath which was not the sheath pattern that was originally issued with the 49Er Series of knives, should make one's hairs stand on the back of the neck somewhat.....To my knowledge Schrade were not even involved with the Ducks Unlimited Program and their 'Special Edition Series' until after the 49Er <mid/late 70's> ceased production 79/80.

Larry is only half right, Hi Old Mate.
I would say, The knife in question could be in the right box and yes "Schrade?" could have made a "Special Edition Series 49er" YESTERDAY or after 2004 - Thank You Mr. Taylor. I would like to know why the paperwork is missing, There is too many knives around now I would not buy. As for boxes and tins I have quite a number of new ones.

Hey guys, that one is a bit of a puzzler. Honestly it does look legit, but then again I've got no proof. The butt is definitely not the ripply model of the originals, but appears to be a DU special piece. The sheath does appear to be the correct size, although again not the original design. I can just make out Ellenville on the box when I zoom it on editing software, and the USA tang does point to USA production and not Taylor China. I can ask the guys Monday and see if they recall an SFO like that. Schrade did make most of their sheath in house, especially the molded ones like that one, which were found on the PH's, fillet knives, etc.

G'Day Ken, when I first responded I thought this was a current auction so answered in very general terms..I dont think its a Taylor Clone, in fact I did not look at all the available photos until now...to call the knife a 49Er is a misnomer as it is not, its just a similar pattern as it lacks the gold metal effect to both butt and cross guard, and also the individual 'benchmade' cutlers mark on butt. It does however carry the Schrade Hallmark similar to my DU 165OT. My Hallmark is SC-<hammer logo> -E <E stood for 1989 manufacture. That Hallmark shows SC -<hammer logo>-C which would indicate it was manufactured in 1987 <the alphabet was used to signify years> My 165OT DU is also in similar white box so it would appear that this set is part of the DU Special Series however to call it a 49Er is what called the whole set into question when it quite obviously isn't....Hoo Roo

P.S. I had not seen Eric's response when I posted this latest response...but it does appear correct to the DU series.

Ok......thanks much and back story on this is that an unmarked Buck 105 was sold with a sheath like this and that engendered some questions on the Buck forum.....

And that eventually led here.

I'm taking from info here that the sheaths were probably made in-house by Schrade. Turns out there were sheaths left over and they were sold by Smokey Mountain a while back.......so I suppose that's how one of them ended up being filled with a Buck 105 and sold on the Bay.

Darn nice sheath.

I just took my foot out of my mouth, Larry you are alway right! so I will sit up here and be good from now.
What happened to my flyers and how is your computer now after it was looked at. .. Ken

The 498DU was produced 1988/1989. Catalog # was S0904089
Im trying to locate a picture of the sheath,

From somebody that doesn't know sqwat....it looks like a nice knife, but I hate DUCKS, so I would have passed it buy.
