I've decided I need a good bowie knife for my collection and could use some help. What I'm looking for is fairly simple, a large thin blade (ten or eleven inches), carbon steel and leather sheath. Price range $400-$600. I have a few larger blades in my collection but a high quality bowie is something I'm missing out on. A few suggestions for makers and their contact info would be good.

I have a ripper...made by Muela.(made in spain).....it has a fantastic handle with good finger groves....not too big not too small....its not a top of the range kind of knife but its very decent and usable....has just the right weight for me....I dont have a link sorry but check out the brand "Muela"

it started to show slight corrosion on the brass fittings (surface only)....I could easily polish it but I like the used look...along with the wooden handles....the blade goes right thru to the butt.....this really is a knife I would use and not one just to have in my cabnit....I have a few bowies that I spent a fair bit of money on and this one was by far the cheapest of them all at $150 Australian..(around half that in $US)......but even though its cheap its actually the one I like the most. It has an awsome mature and dated apearance all in one. Kinda like if the buck 110 had a daddy.

it would never slide out of your hand and is well balanced.

but I'm sure you'll find your own baby. spending more money doesnt allways mean you're gonna like the knife as I found the hard way.

The Camillus OVB line designed by Jerry Fisk comes to mind. I don't know if you can still find them for they were made in limited quanities. Check out Camillus's web site for photos.
Good collecting!

M@thew,

I can make a handforged bowie knife for you, if you want, let me know what you’d like and I’ll quote you a number and a timeframe, no strings attached :)

It’s been some time since I made a nice bowie and it would be a nice time to make one again, feel free to browse my website to check out the kind of knives I make and the quality of them.

My email is ariel@aescustomknives.com.ar

Regards,

Ariel

Fehrman knives, of course! Although you did say you wanted it to be thin; Fehrman bowies are 1/4 inch stock. They have a nicer cutting edge than most big bowies, though.

3 excellent Makers come to mind in your price range. Brett Gatlin, Jason Cutter and Craig Camerer. Any of them could make you an awesome bowie to your specs within your price range.

Check out Gib Guignard at Cactus Forge. His hand forged Bowies are something else and in your price range also.

Listen to this man. He knoweth of what he speaketh. :)

Brett Gatlin was already mentioned, but he's worth mentioning twice :)
I think Greg Covington's fine blades are within the price range- his Combat Special definitely is. He also does excellent work.
