I was hoping somebody could tell me who makes a good Parang and a website to buy it.

Edit:for spelling.

In my opinion, a good parang is one that has the heft and length to perform an outstanding job. Of course, this would depend on what you use it for.

It can be sharpened quite easily. Holds an edge for a long time. It will be susceptible to rust but shouldn't be a problem with a little help from oil.

It is almost maintenance free. It is cheap compared to other blades. If you lose it, it wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg to replace it.

Usually, you would want to have at least two parang in your house, just in case, you have to replace the other one immediately for a good reason.

Parang is common in Southeast Asia. Almost every household has one. It is used for chopping wood, trimming arm-sized branches to killing snakes if necessary.

A good parang is not known for its good looks. Its finishing is slightly crude or rough, unless you get one done by an excellent knifemaker.

All parang are meant to be used, and used regularly.
Basically, it is cheap, tough and lasts a long time, and easily replaceable.

you won't be finding any in singapore though
we've become too urbanized, and sheeple dominate the society :barf:

Thanks for the responses but I must have my names mixed up. The knife
I'm looking for looks almost exactly like a machete(spl?) except at the last six to 8 or so inches of the blade it gets taller. Almost like a big hump at the end of the blade. I was watching a survival show and the guy was using one
and called it a parang. It looked like it was about the length of a machete,
maybe a couple inches shorter.

That sounds more like a bolo. Martindale makes several patterns. A parang is very different from a machete, usually significant thicker, and much more narrow, with a graceful blade arc.

I think I found it, with help from you all. I think it's the, or looked alot like the Martindale Paratrooper knife. It seems like the one I remember was about four inches longer but it has been a while since I saw The survival show where it was being used. Also, the suvivalist teacher was British and the Paratrooper knife is British. Anywhoo.

If you want to see it you can search it at www.actiongear.com
Sorry, I don't know how to link.
