Even though I love my Buck knives, their stockman pattern leaves a bit to be desired as to being traditional looking. Who makes a somewhat reasonable priced large (around 4" - 4 1/2") stockman pattern, made in the USA? Christmas is coming and I`ve got to give the girls some ideas of what I want. Pictures are always appreciated.

Other then GEC, who make fantastic knives but can be (for very good reasons) more expensive, I'd always suggest a Schrade, the 8OT comes to mind, I'd go for a second hand older version though with CV steel.Easy enough to find online or the exchange here. Copper carried one for a long time so he may be the best one to weigh in, I love my 34OT (much smaller though) it and my GEC white owl are the two I switch in and out between as an EDC now. I actually had 3 34ot's at one point but gifted the other two,. I do have a buck 301 I got from yourself and love it but I like the CV steel as a rule :) I have another GEC (from cooper actually) but it's for woods walking (along with a fixed blade) and looking at :).

340t (the 8OT is the same, but bigger) this is one fo the ones I cleaned upa nd gifted

GEC is doing a run of stockmans that will be released in the near future. They will have multiple handle choices for you to choose from. Here is a link to view the works in progress pics from their site

I love the 34OT, I`ve got one new in the box, that Alison bought me for Christmas 2004 (I know, I wrote it on the box), but it`s a bit too small. I had several 8OT`s but never they never really "grew" on me. I would not mind an Uncle Henry version, with the staglon handles. At one time, a few years back, I had an old Schrade display case, full with the Old Timers and Uncle Henrys, but sold them off. I`m thinking maybe a Case, with stag handles.

Case 6375 4 1/4" closed and made in the USA. I prefer Case's CV over their Stainless but either does a good job just my personal tastes. Reasonably priced as well.

I find the CASE Large Stockman cv in Amber Bone to be a very decent knife indeed, actually, their bone is better quality than their Stag offerings. If you want Stag, GEC is the way to go (they seem to have really good quality antler).

I know you said US made, but have a look at Böker Germany carbon Stockman, very good finish & quality and a keen price too.

Good luck!

case humpback stockman #5524 in stag is a nice variation , but it is only 3 5/8" , so it may be smaller than you want.

I just picked up a yellow handle Case Large Stockman with CV steel and I love it, razor sharp, mirror polished finish 4 1/4 inch long closed and all for under $40.00 Dollars. Now I can't wait to pick up another handle version of the same knife. I think Case is a heck of a deal and made in U.S.A too.

Since you have such big hands....;)
Check out some of the Queens at Mike Latham's Collectorknives.net.
He's a paid dealer here on BF.
D2 steel & good looking bone.
This is the Cattle King at 4 1/4"

And the Stockman at 4".

Check out prices here...Queen.
Better steel & way cheaper than a GEC.

You know me. I'll always go with Schrade for my first choice. The 897UH is a great place to start. Here's a pic that Codger sent me of some of his.

I've still got a Uncle Henry King Ranch I carried years ago on the farm, and while I showed cattle. I can post up photos later when I'm at home.

Ya know, Camillus used to make a really nice one for Colonial.:D

Those Frontiers are a bit rough in finish but the steel sharpens up very satisfyingly!

Thanks to a very generous gift from Mykel, I am now the proud owner of this Craftsman 9470.

Nice! Good one, Mykel!

I love GEC and Queen stuff, but they are spendier than some of the other options.

Rough Rider makes a "budget" version that is over 4" closed, and my experience with RR has been good - they are very nice quality.

Check out the large retail site named after a river, and look for the Rough Rider 708 Rifleman - but now that you have a Craftsman, you are good to go!

best

Forgot about this- while looking for photos for another thread I found this one of my King Ranch

Very nice of Mykel for the gift. I like that long matchstick pull (think that's the right name for it) on the main blade.
