I'm looking for a good quality and cool utility knife for possible urban and rural surveying-type work overseas. Looking for something small enough to be light, convenient, and not too threatening. Also looking to be in that classic bowie style, with a good hilt to keep my hand from sliding.

This gorgeous Patton is kind of what I'm thinking, but I'm hoping for under 8" overall, and more of a user than a showpiece:

I've looked at the Anza Mini-Bowie and the Spyderco Street Beat, both of which have a deep choil rather than a guard (which is cool too). However, is there any more traditional variant I should be checking out? Hoping to stay under $150. Some of the "chute" knives are close, but wrong blade-shape and too tiny of a hilt for my taste.

I've seen a few other mini-bowies online, but some are more like fat little skinning knifes with some vague bowie touches. I'm looking for a more proportionally-shrunk bowie, almost kind of like the "Short" model Ka-Bar knives.

Thanks for any info.

Wow, those are pretty dang cool. Unfortunately most of his pics from earlier this year have gone "?", but here's one of the pics still up. This one's around 8" OAL, and about what I'm looking for.

If I don't run across something else that screams out to me, I might need to see what his order status is...
