Yeah ! I've seen this post before. Who would you recommend for a high quality small sharpener for use in the field.

If space wasn't an issue (of course this wasn't always the case), always bring the longest and widest sharpener you can carry. That said, the size of a sharpener also depends on the length and the blade shape of the knife/knives you're carrying. I prefer diamond coated sharpeners because they're easy to maintain, and you can use them wet or dry. For my size of knives, I always keep a 6"x2" DMT Fine in my backpack. Recently my favorite is the double sided DMT Diafold coarse and fine (about 4" long folded).

Greg Lightfoot has a handy little folding pouch with a coarse hone and a fine hone that are removable. The pouch is velcroed. I think its described much better on his website. I used to carry ceramic sticks but I'll try the Lightfoot on my next field excursion.

DMT's Coarse/Fine Diafold.
Not only does it give two grits to work with, but it has a handle to hang on to, which is a big plus out in the sticks where tables and shop benches are at a minimum. Great product, very up front thinking in the design.
Of course, if your gonna be near your truck, a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 is the ticket.
Happy edge making!

I like the DMT Fine diamond tapered rod . It's supper light, can sharpen serrated or plain blades and gut hooks. It folds up nice for easy and safe storage.

I would have to agree with the DMT Diafolds and the Gatco Tri-Seps as the two I'd be most likely to take with me into the field.

For those who don't want to be bothered with holding an angle or are honing impaired, the Meyerco Sharpen-It is an effective pocket size sharpener which works on just about any cutting implement. Has tungsten carbide discs, alumina ceramic discs, and a tungsten carbide rod for serrations.
