Who makes custom scales for the Kershaw Chive?

A year or so ago, I saw a Chive up on eBay, which had smooth bone scales, engraved with a scrimshaw of Wyatt Earp. Believe it sold for $60 or so.

I'm kinda kicking myself now, not that I'm that big of a Tombstone fan, but that it was a really cool variant on my favorite mini-knife.

Does anyone know of a maker who does bone or stag scales for the Chive? I've seen Santa Fe Stoneworks' gear, and I salute their creativity, but it's just not my style.

Amazing little knife, the Chive...

i dunno if STR would do something like that. i would think he would though. maybe ask him

I've read his page and seen where he does G-10 scales and such but it wouldn't hurt to shoot him an email and ask. He is very reasonable on his custom work and does some wonderful pieces.

I asked STR, and he referred me to a friend of his who specializes in such materials. I'll report back when I find out.

Boone Trading has hippo and warthog ivory (non-endangered, Africa has large surpluses of hippo that are culled by the local gov'ts). Be kinda neat to have a piece of hippo on a knife; no worse than wearing leather shoes if you think about it.

Awesome!! When you get it back try to get us a pic of it. I would love to see it.

Okay, I asked the other scalesmith, and he said it'd be too tricky to relieve the insides for the various mechanisms.

I suggested: how about shave down the scale, and veneer the outside of it?

He says: good call, but is it a frame lock or liner lock?

I say: dang, you're right, that'd be tricky. But wait, can you leave the bottom scale (with the pocket clip, safety, and frame lock) stock, and just veneer the top scale?

Important question: does anyone have a Santa Fe Stoneworks Kershaw? Is the stonework just a veneer applied to the top scale, with the bottom scale left stock?

EDIT: From another BFC member:

I pulled my SFSW Leek out and took a closer look at it... It is actually a "veneer" layed on top of the original metal scale. It does not have the stonework on the back.

Bingo, sounds like this is a much easier process than replacing a full scale would be. Time to start thinking about scrimshaw...

The scalemaker is Dirk Potgieter, and he said to feel free to post his name here for anyone else that wants Kershaw scales done.

Various examples of his work have been posted on BFC as well, mostly by dealers carrying his knives.

Dangit, he's in Australia. That would rule out ivory-type products then, since it's a real pain to send them out of the US and then bring them back. Wonder if he has access to kangaroo bone (I have seen knifesmiths who used it) or New Zealand red stag for grips.

Any other U.S.-based folks who can do overlays and don't mind doing bone/ivory/horn?
