Just wondering if there's a maker out there who does that. I'm really looking for a head only, with the hole style much like the CS Vietnam Tomahawk head, but w/ a hammer poll. Something lighter will also be appreciated, as it might accompany me on a hike. BTW, what would be the best steels (generally speaking, of course) to combine for a using head? Thanks in advance.

Dr Jim Hrisoulas ( www.atar.com ) is doing three layer axeheads (kinda like san mai, but without pattern welding) and is well-known for his pattern welding/damascus work, you might drop him a line. Probably a little costly though.

Lee Reeves does an outstanding little camp hatchet that is a forged tool steel edge on a mild steel back, with an Osage orange or Hickory handle. It meets your criteria for light and good. I bought one myself and have bough several for my customers who have seen mine. Best part? The price is $105.

Wow. If only I had $950. Back to reality, who makes an AFFORDABLE tomahawk? That is, anything under $150.

As luck would have it, Lee just launched his website yesterday.
Lee's Site

BTW, Lee doesn't give the size on his site, and since he calls them "axes" you really have a hard time recognizing they are only about 14" long.

Well, Lee does some really good work. Can't wait to see when they get more info on his site. No prices, either, though. Do you think he'd do a custom job?

Hey, Raymond makes some nice damascus axes there. Still too pricy, though. I heard/read somewhere that some guy makes damascus tomahawks and axes for under $120. But I can't remember who.

The best way to find out about Lee's work is to call him. A friend did his site and I'm not sure Lee is on the net himself. As I said earlier, his (single edge) hatchets are $105. I don't know about the doubles.
