Can anyone point me in the direction of a maker who uses traditional japanese methods of swordsmaking?

Hi,
I don't know why you would want to have a sword made the traditional way anymore. Trust me... I have owned many traditional Japanese Katanas and have either broken or warped the ones I used for training. The way the swords were made was very good for the day but techniques and materials have come such a long way. A katana from these makers would serve you well and out perform a traditionaly made Sword from my experience

Phil Hartsfield 5,250 2 year wait There is one on Ebay right now for 7,000

JSP Bladrigger I think about 4,000 4 year wait.

Busse Combat Around 100 dollars an inch and made out of the best steel available IMHO about another 4 year wait Depends on what they tell ya) They might be able to fit it in the production schedule.

These three folks make arguably the best sword on the market. JSP and Hartsfieild use A2 tooling steel and Busse uses INFI which by the way let me say is nothing short of Awesome. But JSP and Hartsfield swords still have the traditional look and have tsubas. A Busse sword can (for right now anyway) only have a blade catch.

They all make great weapons. And I would trust any of these swords over a traditional one. Trust me. Like I said I have broken a few and it's not hard. I even trashed a shin shinto katana before... that breaks a guys heart. And besides Some of these sword makers (Busse) gives you a lifetime garauntee that if you break it or mess it up they will replace it or fix it for free. No traditional sword can do that. Not even many traditional smiths with garauntee their work like that. I was goning to have mine traditionally made but the maker told me he wouldn't warranty it against chips in the blade from cutting thick wood. That is why one of the above makers is working on my sword. Better materials, better tempering process, better warranty. That's just my 2 cents.
