I want another fishing knife and I've been looking at a hellefisk. Whatt do you guys think?
Doesn't matter if its stainless or carbon steel as long as it has decent edge retention.
I have 3 requirements.
1- It must be a fixed blade
2- It must float
3- No serrated edges

In my experience most floating knives are cheap novelty items. I can't think of anything that would compete with that gorgeous hellefisk.

Unless the size of the fish you are catching need a bigger blade, the Helle Hellefisk looks like a very fine knife for the job. I love Helle knives and have long considered getting the Hellefisk. Only thing stopping me is spending the money for a knife that will seldom get used. Most of the places the boys & I fish are catch and release.

I've kept a Helle on my boat year round for the past 4 to 5 years or so, and save for the occasional sharpening (I say occasional because I'm not that lucky when it comes to catching tuna or dolphin fish), it has held up wonderfully despite my total lack of care for the knife, and the hostile 4 season weather it puts up with; it's really all or more than one really needs, unless your livelihood is fishing year round...I consider it a professional level user, or an expensive ornament.

You can always put a lanyard on the knife if it has a hole. (Replaces the floating aspect or add a foam float to the lanyard.) I looked long and hard for a pair of needle nosed pliers for fishing with a hole to attach it to "me" as I am afflicted with dropping them in water or can't find them when I need'em. The result was I carried multiples so I could always find one in the past. Still do as it has become a habit.

I really don't use a knife fishing much or when I do use it, it is not for fish. I typically fish catch and release and seldom keep one. Hence, my "fishing knife" is a Vic SAK that I carry as an EDC anyway. Cuts down on trying to remember if I have a dedicated fishing knife with me.

I am usually wearing a fishing vest versus carrying a tackle box as I mostly fish streams. I do have a tackle box with me when lake fishing.

Some years ago, several companies made knives like this and they can still be found if one is persistant, in any condition from relic to lightly used to new in the package. Here is one example, an H-52 Imperial from 1959. Stainless blade, scaler back, cork handle with lanyard ring, vinyl sheath.

And of course whatever Imperial did, Colonial was sure to follow and viceversa.

You can purchase keychain hollow rubber/plastic type floats at your local boat dealer. Just get one that will actually float the weight of your favorite knife.

ok just looked at the bobber lanyard. Not exactly what I want. I think I'm gonna re-handle a mora with cork.
