Who makes the best Loveless-style Chute knife?

I like Velarde's knives, but have never had the chance to handle one. I have on the other hand had the chance to handle a couple of S.R. Johnson's knives and they were outstanding. Wonderful fit and finish and they felt like part of my hand.

Kressler, Johnson and Velarde.

I'm not sure how true to the Loveless style this is, but Rob Brown sure makes a nice chute knife and his prices are most reasonable:

Thanks for the GenO Denning site.

Here's a pic that Ricardo Velarde sent me. No comment...

For the pricepoint, Geno's work is very good. What sort of price range are we looking at in the other makers? (I sort of like to level the playing field a little when comparing makers, after all would you compare a $20K Ford to $40K+ European make? That assumes of course, the $40K+ is even an option ;) )

I've never seen a Loveless design that I didn't like, and the Chute knife is no exception. My first handmade was a Denning, and he does beautiful work at a great price. Johnson, Velarde, Kressler, Herron and Brown all do great work. My next fixed blade is going to be a Chute knife and the maker is Kit Crason. I'm bringing the stag for the knife to Blade next week and Kit is supposed to bring the patterns. I'd like either Tim Herman or Kristi Obenauf to engrave the guard, we'll see.

Oh, the knife will look something like this.

JD,

What a dilema, so many good makers. I seem to remember your post awhile ago on Chute knives and I share your appreciation. I think my first choice would be Ricardo, a great maker and a really good guy. In fact a Stag Chute would go well with my other Velarde fighters.
Steve Johnson and Kressler are awesome but just a bit too much money for me. Denning does make a great knife, I'd probably go that way for an affordable knife of the highest quality. Herron really should be proud if him!
A guy named Doggett could probably do a really good job on one. I know his work is good, his prices are good and he needs money to fund other toys.;) I've got a Stag fighter of his and the fit and finish are great.
Please, keep us posted on what you decide.

Bob, I remember that pic, and you could be right.
Great looking knife.

Wow- I used that exact photo when I ordered/designed a chute/hunter from Rick Ludwig a while back. Outstanding design.
(PhilL- I'm jealous as hell btw... :) )

I'm with Mr Doggett on this one, that SRJ has to be the best chute knife ever. We've just been having this discussion over at British Blades "what's a chute knife?" and that is the one I had to use as the perfect example.

The chute knife in its Platonic form :D

All those are great choices, what about Edmund Davidson, He makes it integral and sweet..:)

Is there a pic somewhere?

Well, Mr. Denning was at Blade, and after having looked at his solder lines - or lack thereoff: his knives all look like integrals - I bought a set of ironwood burl and placed an order for a chute knife with him.
