I am a newbie in the market for an everyday sub-4" locking folder. Which manufacturer is reputed to make the highest-quality knives in this category? I'm not worried about particular models at this point, I just want some opinions regarding the top, grade-A+ manufacturers.

Al-Mar, Benchmade, Chris Reeve, Extrema Ratio, Fallkniven, Kershaw, Microtech, MOD, Seki-Cut, Spyderco, Strider just to name a few.

Redguy hit the good ones. You really have some hunting ahead of you with the number of choices out there. Just remember that there is no such thing as a "best"

Who makes the best car? ;)

Tough question to answer. You can't go wrong with any of the choices Redguy mentioned. I guess I'd add Emerson if you're into the whole "tactical folder" thing. Among the production folders I personally own, I've found Microtech has the most consistent quality and best fit-n-finish. But I haven't owned anything by Chris Reeve or some of the other really high-end production knives.

Your best bet is to figure out how much you're willing to spend, then figure out what kind of use you'll put the knife to. That will help you narrow down the field considerably.

I love these what is the best...... Best for what? What are you planning on using it for?

He did say (best) quality. I believe he meant that the demands and functions set and given by the manufacturer are met with any knife chosen from the particular manufacturer and (all) knives are of consistent quality of manufacture with no random defects due to the manufacturing process. Well that is what I think.

Spyderco seems to fit my definition particularly well.

I didn't ask who makes the "best" knives, I asked who, in your opinion, has a reputation for making the highest-quality knives? If you don't like the question, don't answer. I don't know a damn thing about knives, but if you were to ask me the same thing about cars, I would say that I think BMW makes the highest-quality automobiles.

My votes would go Chris Reeves and William Henry. I'm not sure that I would say the are the best value, but I would say best quality. Kershaw would probably get my nod for best value.

Welcome to the forums!

There are many manufacturers that make great knives, all for different reasons. There are knives very beautiful that will not work in the outdoors. There are knives that will be great for survival but very thick to cut in every day chores. There are knives with the highest materials, but extremely expensive. There are knives with excelente value, but not very good looking.

Knowing what the knife will do will give you better answers and you'll soon be learning more about knives.

Just be patient my friend, and don't take the questions like something personal.

If you ask me, look for something by Spyderco or Benchmade, not very expensive. Feel it, and it will give you a better understanding about what to look in your next knife.

Sorry for my english :o

Best is a subjective thing. And some of us WERE trying to help you out. Asking bestr for what IS a reasonable question. I only buy Custom knives, so MY best knives is: Rick Hinderer, Mike Obenauf, Kevin Wilkins, Patrick Nihiser, Matt Cucchiara......They make some of the best knives in my world. And fro best production knives are: Chris Reeves Knives & Spyderco knives.

I agree about Kershaw being a great value. My Scallion is my favorite knife in my collection right now. My Spyderco Cricket is my best everyday workhorse, as a pocketknife/money clip. The blade shape is very versatile (last week I was using it to scrape paint and epoxy off the cowl of a golf cart), the metal is tough and holds its edge well. Fit and finish are excellent.

Howdy Bojax34,
Welcome to the forums. But your answer might be different if somebody asked you who made the best pickup truck versus who makes the fastest sports car versus who makes the best SUV.

That is why we keep giving you more than one company. Different companies specialize in different kinds of knives, just as different car makers are best at specific types of cars. There are also price classes. Some companies specialize in very expensive knives. Others specialize in less expensive. So if you wanted the best knife that costs $50, you might not go to a company that speciallizes in $350 knives.

hope that helps explain why we cannot tell you what you want us to.
