I just got back from a local spring shop. The guy showed me a big stack of 24' 1/4" x 2.5" 5160 that he "doesn't use much anymore". I paid too much for a bar ($65) but wanted to get some back to the shop to bang on it some. Admiral sells it at $99.70 + shipping for a 22" 1/4"x2".

I am thinking that if we can get enough guys together to buy the whole lot - we could get a much better deal. He was talking about the price of steel being very high right now so he "might just sell it all as scrap".

It looked like he had about 50 bars - I am sure we could get it all for $2000 or less. What'ya think? let's co-op. thats twenty guys at $100 a piece - for enough 5160 to make over 1000 nice Bowies!

let me know who is interested - I am thinking you could pick it up at the Stamford CT show in May or I can truck it up to IG's place or come by my shop here in Monroe, CT.

Best,

I am in if you can tell me roughly what that would work out to for each guy I just got 22' from, admiral at 3" and 1/4 thick. so what would we be looking at for each person?

If you guys forge get some used coil springs (5160) form the junk yard. Sometimes they will give them to you...Sometimes $5,
Just a thought
I think ball joints are 52100. Just forged a blade out of one. I'll heat treat it and see how it turns out.

I guess it really depends on how many guys we could get to buy in and how bad the spring shop owner wants to get rid of it......

If it's only a few guys - I doubt he'd be willing to sell the bars at much under what I got the first one for. I was hoping on a volume discount!

Please let me know how much you'd be interested in ( 24' bars ) and we can go from there. I am hoping to help other forumites here - my 24' oughta last me a while yet.

Best,

PJG

Hi, I'm a new maker, but I'm interested in 5160, particularly for larger blades. So, if cost is reasonable, I'm also interested in a piece. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what happens. Also, thanks for the offer to help out your fellow makers! :)

if you guys can find a local leaf and coil spring shop in your area (they can retemper and fit springs) , they normally have a bin for broken springs. since the price for scrap steel is next to nothing, they are normally willing to give it away if you ask the right person.
