Who needs fingers?

At 11:15 I cut my finger so badly and deeply fith my 18" AK that the muscle was exposed. I think the knife got jealous as I am considering another knife to throw on the pile. I like the story already-Around 10:00 I was sharpening the knife and my dad saw me. He said he didn't like the knife-this was because he thought I would hurt myslef-he plays with the knife whenever I have it out. To be exact he told me: "You're going to drop the knife and cut off your toe." All I did was remove the knife from the scabbard and it drew across my index finger. So being a 19 year-old I decided to wrap my finger in a wad of napkins and tie it as tight as possible. I have yet to re-check the wound to see if it has stopped bleeding. As I write this I am trying to decide whether or not to drive myself to the hospital. You would be astounded to see the amount of blood that poors out of a lacerated finger-there are pools of it in front of the sink and in front of the coubard, where I went to get the napkins. It is by no means life threatening-I think it's a riot. It is a somewhat deserving wound. I'm sure I'll live the next few months and see 20- I'm really not too concerned. Uncle Bill do you have antmore of those forward curving Bura knives? Anyone else have any good khukuri self inflicted wound stories? I let you guys know how things turn out: if I got stiches etc.

I hope you're still hanging around the forum, if you aren't on your way to the ER.... Have a look at it once the bleeding slows down. Make sure you can move your finger normally and you have feeling in it, no numb spots (cut or bruised nerves). Is the wound closed up, just a thin line, or gaping open? If you need stitching to close the wound so it'll heal properly or more involved surgery to repair cut blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, or nerves -- the sooner the better. Don't delay; there's a limited window of opportunity.

Maybe it's just a lot of blood and not much damage -- I hope so -- but if it's more serious deal with it, immediately. You do need fingers ... fully functional fingers ... all ten of them. You Earthlings can't cut them off and grow new ones like people from Remulak....

Matthew, I imagine that among khuk owners there is a far-above-average incidence of scars from self-inflicted wounds.
I have an ugly scar on the top of my left hand from a particularly nasty cut that resulted from a glancing blow while pruning some tree limbs. I was holding a limb with my left hand as I chopped with my right. Unfortunately, as I was swinging the khuk, the blow was deflected by a small branch that got in the way and the blade hit the top of my hand. Needless to say, I try to be a bit more careful nowadays.

Two words...

Tetanus shot.

(Even if the cut doesn't look bad, the side effects could be.)

Take care,

Tom

Matthew,
Yes, I would believe the incredible amount of blood that shot from your 'wound'. I did a similar thing to my thumb as a 16 year old and thought it was absolutely fascinating. Even after they threw 6 stitches to close it up.
Hope you took Tom and Cougar's advice: tetanus shot and sutures.

Longrifle, all I can say is you are not alone. Most of us who have played with knives during our life have scars to show for it.

I would get the wound checked out. If it is worse than superficial you may need a little repair work. And, there is the chance of infection and take if from one who has just been there (again) infections can be very nasty, indeed.

But, don't let a cut finger turn you off of knives. Just try to be more careful in the future. This is a learning episode.

Khukuri FAQ

I thought I would let you guys know that the bleeding stopped. I think it should be fine. Unfortunatly, my favorite thing to do is play the piano-it may be some time before I can play, atleast very well. Thanks for the kind words and adivice. I will reassure you all that this expierence did not turn me off to knives. Hell if anything I like them more.
Matthew

The last time I was in the hospital for a cut finger, the Doctor said that they want to see it within 12 hours. This is mainly due to infection. A shorter time would seem even better.

Will

I really needed to say this. If you go to Uncle Bill's post on how to unsheath a khukuri I took the "no" approach. That just goes to show that I should pay more attention to what I'm doing. Maybe some other people will be more careful now. I know I will be especially after sleeping with my arm sticking straight up in the air. Uncle Bill as for the infection I have been keeping it soaked in Neosporin-thanks very much for the concern. As for the spelling errors in the original post I think they are kind of appropriate. It's a pretty good laugh. Thanks again everyone

Matthew, we are all hooked together in this great web of life so when you cut your finger I can feel the pain. Take care for both our sakes.

The prayers done at Bishwakarma puja include no damage to the owner of the khukuris coming from BirGorkha so I am counting on those prayers to keep you well and from harm's way. But, please read the warning labels on everything!!!!!!!

Mizutani San.

Out of curiousity ... regarding fingger cutting practices ...
  • Is Yakuza still exist?
  • Is it true that they cut fingers of those who have feud with them?
  • What sort of weapon they use in the fingger cutting execution?
Matthew.

Do take care your beautiful fingers! You & whatever yours are Allah's precious gift to this world!

NEPAL HO!

Mizutani san: I'm so glad that Mohd asked such perhaps inelegant and tastless questions of you. I wanna know too! If I had not been pretending to have been more careful bout listening on how to make my manners I'd have asked long ago. They say that curiousity killed the cat, and I'm dying to hear. ( I am teasing you *slightly* Mohd ).

And to longrifle

"Matthew: Do take care your beautiful fingers. You and whatever yours are Allah's precious gift to this world."

Mohd is right about you Matthew, but I hape he also recognises how true what he has said is true of Mohd.

Let's you, Matthew, and Mohd and Rusty be kinder to our Dear Father tomorrow and not make him eat so many antacids for the upset stomach? I'm sure that it would delight him to get through the day worrying less for us three.

On the other hand, as someone said, if God is watching us, at least we can be entertaining.

Rusty.

Thank you for your reminder on the ethical points of open discussion! I am trying very hard to understand the real meaning behind your phrases ... but ... due to my lack of high English understanding ... I am failed! Anyhow, I guess something must be very wrong with the way I asked Mizutani San about Yakuza ... if that is true ... then I would like to openly & humbly apologise to all of you especially to Mizutani San!

Mizutani San.

Please forgive me for all my Qs if those Qs are considered as an offence to you! If that is the case ... of course you don't have to answer it! And ... I will certainly update my prev posting & delete all those Qs if you want me to do that - please email me to do that!

Please do advice me about it!

NEPAL HO!

Mohd, don't you dare withdraw the questions til wrongfriend answers them for me and all the rest of us to hear. You asked them very nicely.

We are all children toward each other's culture and sometimes forget the niceties. So what if we act like a 3 or 4 year old and ask "why" all the time. So what if you get embarrassed at asking if all the rest of us get to find out the answers too. LOL.

Out of all the forumites you, Mohd, have invariably been the kindest, gentlest, most obviously loving and caring. To see you let your enthusiasm get the best of you is a delight.

I hope that your own children get to hear tales from their grandmother that you have tried to hide or forget about "when your father was your age do you know what he did when he thought he wan't going to get caught... And I'll bet that your wife is the most avid listener of those tales.

If both of your parents are living, please give them my compliments on having reared you well. And their restraint at letting you make it to manhood alive ROTFLMAO.

Rusty, you are a gentleman and a scholar!

I hate to post this (I will make me look like an even bigger fool) but it's pretty funny. When I first got my Emerson it didn't leave my side for a LONG time-I took it everywhere. Now I mean no offense to Himilayan Imports or Uncle Bill but when you compare the sharpness of an HI (at least out of the box) to an Emerson the HIs look like butter knives. My Emerson will EASILY shave the hair on your face. Now that you have some picture of the Emerson this is what I did: with an open blade and knife in hand I went to scratch the back of made head. When I came across some resistance I began to wonder what may have happened-I wasn't able to satisfy the desire to scratch-I couldn't reach it. I noticed I had a strange sensation in the middle of my ear. I reached for my ear and to my astonishment it was bleeding quite profusly. I love that knife and could never blame it for any injury I have sustained-I only blame my own stupidity and carelessness. I guess the moral of the stories are that

nly when you are careless will you be injured. Maybe I won't cut myslef again if I stop to think about what I'm doing-I sure as hell doubt that though. No one has ever accused me of being an over thinker. Oh well the finger is doing great-too bad I don't have a digital camera I would love to post some pics. Thank you all again for the kind words and advice.
Matthew
