I figured some of you guys might find this as useful as I did: http://jerkingthetrigger.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/free-map-tools-at-maptools-com/

MapTools.com has a section of free .PDF downloads of several map tools like rulers and UTM grids. They will not hold up as well as the heavier plastic tools that you can buy but I had good luck with using a laser printer on transperancy film and then laminating the film. I actually wish I could find a simple premade map rule like the one that they have for free in the download section.

While you are there, you might want to check out some of the great tools that they sell as well.

I have several of their utm grids and other tools. Great folks to deal with and very high quality stuff.

I have some things on order with them that I am pretty excited about trying. Bless them for making such a wide array of useful tools that noone else is making!

You can also print things like that and topo maps, etc. on RiteInTheRain copy paper - bubblejet won't work well, but laser printing or photocopying will.

The Rite in the Rain paper is great for topo maps but the UTM grids and rules will work better on something transparent.

I have used there map tools for adventure racing for the past 3 years and have always been dead on and reliable. The only problem with them is that you have to buy at least 2 of them because im always losing them.

I purchased some of the grid readers from that website last year. The quality of the products is great. I need to purchase some other readers with multiple scales on them.
