Who out there would pay more for a 'new' old pivot umnuumzaan

Just a question........if the new umnuum pivot is just a cost savings for CRK, and not a design improvement, who out there would pay a higher price for the old 'custom pivot'. I am thinking if the demand is there, why not charge an extra 25 or 30 bucks and include the fancy old pivot and may even the infamous pivot tool.

Seems like a solution, unless of course there is something wrong with the old pivot, other than needing a tool. It just seems generally everyone loves the old one and tolerates the new one. Maybe its time for a Umnuumzaan 'classic'!

I like the look of the old way better. Never held either unfortunately. Next on my list though :D

Much prefer the old, and if they'd make it with a hex center so the tool wasn't necessary, they'd seldom sell a new pivot IMHO.

Old pivot is definitely the better of the two, no doubt! I just unloaded an old pivot Zaan. I miss it already

I seriously doubt they changed the pivot to save money. Contrary to your post, I assume they regard it as a design improvement, since it can now be field stripped without special tools. However, I agree with your general drift - I have a matched pair of old Umnus and wouldn't buy a new one, just because of the cosmetics. That might seem silly but we all make lots of decisions on that basis...and yes, I would pay a little more for the old pivot if CRK offered both for sale.

I like the old style Much better. I traded 1 I bought in 09' and missed it so much I had to get another old model.

I got a good deal on the 1 I got recently. I got mine much cheaper than most of the old model Zaans are going for now.

I don't like the cosmetics of all the 'ad on's' on the new style Zaans! I never had a problem opening my old model without the lockbar extention...tougher thumbs needed.

I don't need another 1 tho, I have 2 old model Zaans.

I've had both and I like the new pivot over the old one. Just like the in-line change to the original lockbar (reworked to make it easier to unlock with thumb), I think the new pivot is a improvement.

I wasn't arguing either side in that statement, so I think we are on the same page. Thinking more about it now, it seems that the old pivot hardware was likely made in-house, and is a very complicated bit of machining, with several angles, perfect center cone, and the flanges, holes and all. I always thought the umnuum was a bit of a machinists 'sampler' to demonstrate the high level of such work at CRK, with its milling, fancy pivot, swedge blade and all. I guess I would be surprised to be informed that they make the components of the new pivot in-house. As nice as the new pivot screw is, it appears to be simply a very high quality 'outsourced' sleeve screw as you might find in aviation components. Not sure if anyone knows if they make their own scews or not? Anyways, if that is the case I would guess the new pivot is more cost effective, or allows them to not raise the price, depending on how you look at it. Don't take any of this wrong, I am a huge CRK fan, and love their product. The new umnuumzaan just doesn't appeal to me in the same way as the old, so I was thinking about why they don't just make it available again

I have three of the old pivot Umnumzaans already so I'm not paying any extra for it. :p

Not I, new pivot hardware looks cleaner, simpler & more refined IMO. Love my "new pivoted" Star-Tac Zaan :D.

I agree! But the regular version did look better with the older pivot. But to answer your question, no I would not pay any more

I actually have both.
The "old pivot style I bought when they first came out (i even had Barry H make a CF scale for it) and the new style.
I must admit I like the looks of the new style better.
I like the lock bar stop, especially with the CRK logo on it.

love my old pivot, but would like to have a new pivot sans lock stop bar. Still don't quite like the thing aesthetically. Give me a wilson combat star tac-new pivot-sans lock stop bar

Just purchased a New in Box 10-16-08 Birth date Umnumzaan on e-pay. Cant wait to get my paws on it!! That makes number eight I think... Better do a head count. :)
