Who owns a Chinook?

I would like to get a Chinook-2 (hollow ground blade). New ones are not particularly cheap to get hold of. I have not actually seen/held the knife. Anyone out there own one, and care to describe what you like/don't like about it, and compare to peers? I don't really see any close comparisons to other models.

No Spyderco is particularly cheap these days. Lots of Chinooks over various generations are available on EB. So, theres no shortage.

I've got a G10 Chinook 4 (flat grind) that I bought as an example of the line and that I keep as a companion to various other Spyders w/upswept (Persian style) blades which include the:

1) K2 Folder
2) 100 Pacer
3) Large Persian Black Micarta Folder
4) Tighe Stick

The size/feel of each of these knives is entirely different. All I can say is that the G10 Gen2 Chinook probably feels no different than the G10 Gen 4 Chinook or any other standard G10 scaled Spyderco.

I don't particularly like or dislike the Chinook but, for an EDC, I'd prefer the 100 Pacer which is bigger/thinner than the Chinook. The K2 Folder is also thinner but a bit too large for normal EDC duty. The Persian is too "nice" to carry and the Tighe Stick is a "show piece" that really isnt' designed to carry.

Anyway, those are my preferences. YMMV.

i have the chinook 2 and 3. i had the 4 but sold it because it was too different than the others and the powerlock didnt feel as smooth as the regular baclock, i didnt like how slim the handles were in comparison to the thicker handles on the previous versions which feel way better in my hand. i personally think the chinook 2 is the best version and if you can find one in good condition for under $300 i would go for it. the chinook 3 is pretty awesome too, and is very similar except for having a flat grind which some people may actually prefer. these really well made knives, some of the best ones spydercos ever made in my opinion.

Thanks ... one thing, I like to buy/own Made-in-the-USA knives. These ones are Taiwan/Japan. (So is the Chinook-4. but the -2 is USA made.)

Guess it depends on what you consider "US Made." Physically or contractually.

FWIW, a lot of very nice Spydercos have been made in Taiwan & Japan over the years on behalf of Spyderco and other US companies.

Your $, your choice.

BTW, here's a list of Spyderco knives made by Taichung in Taiwan on behalf of Spyderco.

I currently own over140 Spyders and 40 of them (in bold) are on this list; previously owned 3 others (in red) that I sold awhile ago.

Among the knives in this list that I still own are arguably some of the BEST knives ever made by (or on behalf of) Spyderco.

The Advocate and Gayle Bradleys, in particular, are highly regarded in the community and it would be a shame IMO if you didn't consider them just because they were made in Taiwan.

At least my Military and Para 3 are made in the U.S.A.
And the Dragonfly 2 twins are made in Japan...

I couldn't help myself ... I bought the Chinook-2 that I had my eye on. I made a substantially lower offer than the asking price, and to my surprise the seller said "OK". It's being sent to an address where I won't be able to get it for a few months ... I will post pictures once it's in my possession. I actually prefer the blade shape of the Chinook-I, although interestingly in all the reviews of I-versus-II which appeared after the II was released, everyone said the II was a better knife in every way. Anyway, that was an itch I have had for several years that needed to be scratched.

Many of those models I don't know, but I do like the Zulus and K2s. Sure wouldn't mind owning those. Your collection must be amazing ... have a picture with them all?

Congrats ! If it matters: I have 1, 2 and 4. The 1 is my favorite. Hollow ground and made in Colorado. I just like the less pronounced Persian better, almost a Bowie. Only downsides compared to newer versions are additional weight, and pins instead of screws.

Note that I love Taiwan Spydercos and have a bunch. I don't use knives made in mainland China.

Too many knives to post in a single photo.

I have posted photos of parts of it on the forum from time to time, like my collection of the 3 blade variations of the Gen 2 S/S Police model.

It's a pretty solid collection but there are others here who have more Spydies than I do.
