Who regrinds Spydercos?

I have a Caly 3.5 Super Blue that I beat up for a while and then let sit in a drawer for another 6 months. The edge isn't in the best shape and the blade face has an ugly patina. I'd like to send it to someone who will do a full regrind and maybe refinish the blade. Is there anyone out there that does this sort of thing? Hopefully someone that doesn't have a 6 month waiting period. It's a big plus if they can replace the pocket clip, as mine broke, which is why I put it away to begin with, but I'll send it back to Spyderco for that if I have to.

Super Blue will patina unless you are meticulous about taking care of it. Most people regrind for the purposes of making the knife a better cutter. You may be able to take it to a wire wheel, not sure. I have heard of guys calling Spyderco and buying replacement clips for around $10 shipped, or sometimes they don't have to pay at all. They shouldn't ask for your knife to be shipped out to them for a broken clip replacement.

I am aware of the patina issuee; Hitachi blue steel is my favorite steel for kitchen knives. However, I never got it to patina the way I wanted and when I moved from California to Texas I think the humidity wreaked havoc on my blade, a combination of the moisture in the air + extra sweat (ewww... TMI, I know). Plus yes, I would like to improve cutting performance. I feel like it could be better. I just don't have the ability to do it on my own.

I've read that Tom Krein isn't doing regrinds anymore as he's focusing on his own customs.

No Tom Krein as mentioned. Brad Southard isn't either due to the same reason from what I can gather. I've heard that Richardj here on the forums does re-grinds, but do not have any experience with him or his work.

nccole,

I heard RichardJ was having to take a break due to some health issues? Is he back on his feet again?

kpag,

If you just want the blade refinished, your best bet is probably to just send it back to Spyderco. They will clean it up and resharpen it for the price of return shipping. The pocket clip would cost you extra though.

Not sure about his health, I talked to him on the phone about three months ago, and heard of no issues. Apparently he was down and out for a while, and now he is getting back to it.
