Hey hey no one said it was a terrible idea lol, there are just better ways/tools and using the exarch will take a little more maintenance.

I've gutted fish my 52100 military before, I just scrubbed it very well after I got back. I've also pried with my pm3 before; sometimes you gotta use what you got!

Let me tell you one thing, the little knives on the victorinox are SUPERB at schucking and cutting clams for bait (after the clam is opened of course).

Enjoy the Exarch, I used to carry it alot until i got the Imperium...that NitroV steel is such a killer, stainless and tough!

I took fillets off nicely with a Cold Steel Recon Tanto once in a pinch. And another time with a Becker BK-5. lets see if I can find some ancient photos......................... I have to find some pictures of a deer that I found with its rack jammed between two trees, dead, eaten by coyotes from the arse up, anyway. I'll post if found.IMG_3339.JPGIMG_3380.JPGIMG_3385.JPG

I've caught a couple dozen pikes but never ate one, how do they taste? I might try one just for the halibut.

Ate pickerel one time out of desperation, not the biggest fan...

Pike are ok to good depending on their diet and how far north (colder water) they are. Eutrophic lakes have pike that are almost the same as Walleye. Mesotrophic lakes in warmer areas tend to have more algae growth which taints the meat. In my experience anyway. I could only find one pic of that rack stuck deer that the coyotes ate.

Pickerel? Out of desperation? How are you cooking it? I hope you're not talking about "pickerel" as in Walleye lol.

As for pike. I prefer them over walleye. Once you get past the bones they have a very white meat that is a bit drier than other fish which I prefer personally. But they get iffy past the 30" mark. I find a lot of fish are considered trash fish because the person simply has no idea how to handle them. This goes for rock-bass, white-bass, catfish, fallfish, pike, you name it. I've seen some knuckleheads cook catfish with the skin on and tell me they aren't edible smdh.

Also speaking of maintenance. Just took apart the exarch for some post-trip tool maintenance and was surprised to find no scales or grime inside the knife at all! (I also cleant a couple dozen more fish after I posted this thread) Heck it even still had the stock lubricant in it. As far as folders go the Exarch seems to be sealed well.

my mora 3.5" fillet knife is just so perfect, why use anything else? just such a joy to use a thinner stock like that for all food tbh... just effortless

knife improvement ideas has been going on for ages.
they all work in varying degrees
no matter the size or material,
the bottom line hasn't changed
namely, that it has to be sharp.

I went on a little trip awhile back and only packed dry food, really wanted a fish to eat. I kept catching small trout (I mean I could legally keep them but felt bad) and throwing them back and eventually by the time I caught the pickerel it was super dark. It was very bony and has didnt have much meat on it. I'd probably eat any other freshwater fish over it...that includes carp (from a clean water source).

I wish your Exarch a long productive life!
